Lady Pioneers Start Off 2022-23 Season With a Win

Institute, W.Va. - Glenville State's Women's Basketball team started the season with a 104-78 win against West Chester University. The pressing style that the Lady Pioneers are known for was getting to the Golden Ram forcing 26 turnovers. Glenville would be out-rebounded 47-40 in tonight's contest.

In the first quarter, the Lady Pioneers were forcing turnovers early. Mikayla Perdue hit a three from Skylar Davidson for the first points of the 2022-23 campaign. West Chester finished the quarter with a total of four turnovers. After taking an early five-point lead the Golden Rams started to hit shots keeping the game close. Glenville's six turnovers during the first quarter helped West Chester gain the advantage 21-17.

The Lady Pioneers would be out-rebounded 21-9 in the second quarter. West Chester lead the entire quarter and extended it to nine points. Down the stretch, Glenville shrunk the lead to one possession at the 2:17 mark. Two consecutive buckets by the Golden Rams secured the six-point lead heading into the half.

Glenville's offense exploded in the third quarter scoring 40 points. Taking advantage of the eight  West Chester turnovers Coach Stephens's squad was able to shoot 63% from the field and 61% from three. Breanna Campbell, Mickayla Perdue, and Skylar Davidson all caught fire scoring 13 points in the final two quarters. In the fourth quarter, the Lady Pioneers lead the entire time and did not let up. Glenville also out-rebounded the Golden Rams 11-6.

Mickayla Perdue led the Lady Pioneers in scoring with 20 while shooting 50% from three. Brianna Campbell was close behind with 16 and finished the game with six rebounds and four assists. Glenville's Aline Fevrier accounted for nine rebounds in tonight's win.

What's Next 

The Lady Pioneers will turn around and play Livingstone College at 1:00 PM for day two of the 2022 Atlantic Region Tip-Off Challenge. The Blue Bears have started the 2022-23 season with a 90-60 loss to West Virginia State University. Livingstone is coached by Chiante Wester who enters her third season under the helm. 

Alyssa Boyce led the Blue Bears in scoring against the Yellow Jackets with 12. Boyce also accounted for nine turnovers in the first game of the season. Andresia Alexander and Thalia Carter both produced seven points. Alexander's seven rebounds were the second-highest on the team for Livingstone.
