The Lady Pioneers Fall on the Road to the Golden Eagles

Charleston, W.Va. - Glenville State Women's Basketball team lost on the Road to the University of Charleston 79-70. The Lady Pioneers would be held to 24% shooting from three. However, Coach Stephens's squad produced 36 points off the bench.

In the first quarter of the contest, the Golden Eagles jumped out to a 29-14 lead. Charleston was able to hit shots from deep making back-to-back three-pointers. With 5:58 left in the opening quarter, a fastbreak layup by Glenville's Kamiyah Lyons made it a one-possession game. UC closed out the first quarter on a 9-0 run swinging the momentum in their favor. 

Before heading into the half the Lady Pioneers cut down the Golden Eagles' lead to eight. A three-pointer by Mickayla Purdue sparked a 15-3 run for Glenville. During GSU's hot streak  Purdue and Hya Haywood would be key contributors combing for 11 of the 15 points. Before the end of the second quarter, Dakota Reeves scored another three stretching the Golden Eagles' advantage to eight. Reeves finished the game with 17 points shooting 50% from beyond the arc.

The Lady Pioneers continued to dig into Charleston's lead during the third quarter. GSU brought the contest to within four points three separate times in the quarter. At the 2:37 mark, the Golden Eagles extended their advantage back to double-digits. Once again Coach Stephens's squad went on another run to end the quarter. The Lady Pioneers were able to get out into transition producing high-quality possessions.

With the game within a couple of possessions, both teams battled it out in the remaining quarter.     Right before the five-minute mark, Tor'e Alford hit a three bringing Glenville back to within two points. The Golden Eagles taking advantage of cold shooting by GSU and turnovers, closed out the contest 79-70.

Hya Haywood led the Lady Pioneers in scoring with 12 points followed by fifth-year senior Monique Pruitt with 11. Skylar Davidson accounted for a team-high five rebounds. Transfer Mickayla Perdue produced three assists and seven points for Glenville.
