Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Lex Shaffer

The Pioneers Pull Away Late to Defeat Fairmont State 88-83

Fairmont, W.Va. - Glenville State Men's Basketball team once again won in dramatic fashion defeating Fairmont State 88-83. Coach Caldwell's squad has now won four straight and made history. With the Pioneers' win over the Falcons, Fairmont has lost three straight for the first time since the 2014-15 season.

Fairmont State would strike first in Saturday's Mountain East Conference matchup with a layup by Fronz Hale. For the Pioneers Jacquez Yow answered the early layup with a three. Yow finished the first half shooting 2-3 from deep and scored nine points. Right before the under-15 media timeout, a jumper by Freddie Word started to create separation from the Falcons.

Coming out of the timeout the Pioneers hit a three after a jumper by FSU to go up 15-10. Glenville's five-point lead at the 13:30 mark would be their largest lead of the first half. However, Fairmont State gained control of the contest building a five-point lead of their own before the next stoppage of play.

At the 6:38 mark, the Falcons' advantage grew to eleven with Tommy Williams hitting a jump shot inside the paint. The Pioneers continued to fight after the shooting slump. With less than a minute left in the opening, half Glenville cut Fairmont's lead down to one. With an and-one by David Jolinder, the Pioneers entered the half down four 44-40.

Coming out of the half the Falcons grew their advantage to nine in the first three minutes. Once again Glenville fought back erasing Fairmont State's lead. A three by De'Antee Petree sparked the Pioneers' hot shooting in the second half. Coach Caldwell's squad in the closing half shot 61.4% from the field and 69.2% from three.

Glenville would make it a one-possession game at the 14:14 mark. After Tommy Williams hit a three for Fairmont State, the Pioneers Jordan Turbo Smith hit a layup in transition, and Freddie Word made a three to give Glenville a one-point lead.

In the reaming 12 minutes, both teams traded buckets knowing the importance of each possession. Turbo smith would be clutch for the Pioneers down the stretch along with Jamarvious Jones. Both hot crucial threes to keep GSU within striking distance.

With 3:05 left in the contest, Fairmont's Zyon Dobbs hit a three to regain the lead for Fairmont State. Not until the remaining minute would either team score a point. A Foul by Harison Eghan sent FSU to the free-throw line with 40 seconds remaining. Tariq Woody went 1-2 from the line making it 83-82 in favor of the Falcons.

However, Jamarvious Jones had the answer the Pioneers were looking for. With less than 30 seconds left Jones hit a three to put GSU up by one. After a great defensive stop by the Pioneers, it would come down to free throws. Turbo Smith hit both of them with 9 seconds left putting Glenville up three. Coach Caldwell's squad made another great stop. With running out of time Fairmont fouled Jacquez Yow sending him to the line. Yow with four-tenths of a second left hit both free throws putting the game to rest 88-83

Jordan Turbo Smith led the Pioneers in scoring with 23 in this afternoon's MEC matchup. Freddie Word was close behind with 19 and grabbed seven rebounds. Both Smith and Word had a team-high five assists. Jacquez Yow was just shy of a double-double scoring 15 points and producing eight rebounds. Jamarvious Jones finished the game with 14 going 4-6 from three.
