Lady Pioneers Surge Past Chowan 102-76 With Strong Second Quarter

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State Women's Basketball team rallied past the Hawks of Chowan University in the second quarter to win 102-76. The Lady Pioneers finished the contest shooting 48.1% from the field and 24.3% from three. Chowan would finish the game shooting 50% from three but only had six attempts the entire contest. 

Glenville struck first in the opening minute with Mo Pruitt getting to the free throw line. Both teams throughout the beginning of the first quarter traded blows. Neither team could not create separation that was more than one possession until after the under-five media timeout. 

Coming out of the media timeout Chowan gained a six-point lead. While the Hawks did not produce a dominant run, they took advantage of missed jump shots by the Lady Pioneers. Chowan would hit two of their three three-pointers in the first quarter. A jumper by Cabria Lewis made it a three-point game with 40 seconds left in the quarter. With the Hawk's Brittany Wilcox getting to the free throw line Chowan entered the second quarter with a five-point lead.

While the Lady Pioneers scored 33 points in the second quarter they wouldn't take the lead until the 4:55 mark. After Chowan's Jayah King-Jonshon scored a layup giving the Hawks an eight-point lead GSU produced a 14-4 run. Cabria Lewis, Deja Atkinson, and Chalon Miles all hit key shots to swing the momentum in favor of the Lady Pioneers.

In the remaining four minutes before halftime, Glenville rattled off another dominant streak. This time the Lady Pioneers scored 14 of the next 19 points. During the stretch, Aline Fevrier hit an and-one to put GSU up 12. Down Chowan converting on their own and-one cut it down to nine. With Consecutive layups in transition to end the half, the Lady Pioneers had the advantage 56-43.

Coming out of the half the Lady Pioneers were able to continuously build their lead throughout the third. Chowan would bring the contest back to within 16, but GSU developed a consistent 23-point advantage in the third quarter. Cabria Lewis continued where she left off in the second half dropping eight points in the third.

In the fourth quarter, Glenville was able to grow their lead to 31 points at the 2:19 mark. The Lady Pioneers were able to achieve this by hitting four threes in the final quarter of play. Glenville was also able to hit the 100-point mark for the fifth time this season. Chowan would close the contest on a 6-2 run making 102-76 before the final horn.

Cabria Lewis led the Lady Pioneers in scoring with a game and new season-high 22 points. Mickayla Perdue and Breanna Campbell were close behind with 19 and 18 points respectively. Both Campbell and Dream Cherry finished with seven rebounds in the winning effort. Skylar Davidson had a team-high in assists with three assists and five steals
