Lady Pioneers Withstand Winston-Salem State’s Late Surge

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State Women's Basketball team defeated the Rams of Winston-Salem State 73-65 wrapping up the month of December undefeated. The Lady Pioneers would lead by 18 at the beginning of the third quarter, but Winston-Salem State challenged GSU late. Glenville's 20 offensive rebounds proved to be the deciding factor of the contest.

The Lady Pioneers opened the contest with a made three by Mickayla Perdue. After the early bucket, GSU found themselves trailing early. However, the Ram's lead would be only one possession allowing the momentum to be shifted easily. A three-pointer by Skylar Davidson started to swing control of the game in Glenville's favor.

GSU in the remaining six minutes of the first quarter started to find their rhythm offensively producing a 13-1 run. Five separate Lady Pioneers were key contributors during this stretch. With 56 seconds left in the quarter, Tor'e Alford hit a three to put the Lady Pioneers up 27-12. With two free throws late by Winston-Salem Glenville entered the second quarter up 13.

Throughout the second quarter, both squads battled trading small runs of their own. Deja Atkinson scored all six of her points throughout the second. A jumper by Amaya Tucker sparked the Ram's 13-0 run cutting GSU's lead down to five in a span of three minutes.

In the remaining five minutes of the quarter, the Lady Pioneers answered Winston-Salem's attack with a run of their own. This time Breanna Campbell started an 11-2 run for Glenville. Campbell would strike again for Glenville in the remaining two seconds hitting a layup.
