GSU Men’s Basketball Defeats Alderson Broaddus 118-77 For First MEC Win

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State Men's Basketball team picked up their Mountain East Conference of the 2022-23 season defeating Alderson Broaddus 118-77. Coach Caldwell's squad found their rhythm and was firing on all cylinders this afternoon. As a team, Glenville shot 65% from the field and 52% from three.

In the opening minutes of the first half, both teams were jockeying for the lead. Freddie Word got the Pioneers going in the opening minutes with a layup while the Battler's Kobe Tingy got them started. Alderson Broaddus early on made consecutive three-pointers. Heading into the under-15 media timeout, GSU would be tied at 12-12.

Both squads continued to trade buckets scoring inside the paint and beyond the arc. The Pioneers were able to create separation starting at the 5:47 mark. A free throw by Isaac Lane started a 13-0. During Glenville's dominant stretch Jordan "Turbo" Smith accounted for nine of the 13 points. Alderson Broaddus in the last minute of the half cut the Pioneer's lead down to 10. Turbo once again came in clutch for Glenville. Smith went a-2 from the free-throw line but grabbed his own miss and scored a layup from inside the paint.

Coming out of the half the Pioneers would increase their advantage to 17 points. In the first two minutes of the second half, Freddie Word produced back-to-back buckets. The Battlers continued to keep Glenville's lead in check and eventually made it a 15-point game at the 13:50 mark. Glenville had shot the ball well during the entire contest but caught fire in the second half. The Pioneers shot 71.4% from the field and 64.2% from three on 14 attempts. Before the under-ten media timeout, GSU went on a 12-1 run making it 85-56.

The break in the action would not stop the Pioneers from skipping a beat. Glenville eventually grew their lead past the 40-point threshold   With about two minutes left the Pioneers had the advantage 114-68 from a made three-pointer by Jaelin Johnson. The Fairmont, W.Va. native went 4-8 from beyond the arch in the winning effort.

Jordan "Turbo" Smith lead Glenville in scoring with 33 points followed by Freddie Word with 20 points. This marks the second time the backcourt duo has combined for 50 or more points. Harrison Eghan produced another double-double pulling down 13 rebounds and accounting for 12 points. Junior Jacquez Yow scored 17 points going 6-7 from the field and 5-5 from the free throw line.
