Five Lady Pioneers Finish With Double Figures in Win over Wheeling University

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State Women's Basketball team defeated the Wheeling Cardinals 84-68. In the Winning effort, Breanna Campbell, Dream Cherry, Hya Haywood, Cabria Lewis, and Mickayla Perdue all finished the contest with double figures. The Lady Pioneers 29 points off of turnovers proved to be the deciding factor.

Wheeling started off the game by scoring the first five points. In the first five minutes, GSU could not stop Lauren Calhoun and Shanley Woods. Calhoun finished the contest with a double-double scoring 15 points and 13 rebounds. The Lady Pioneers would hold Woods to just eight points.  Both squads battled with neither creating any separation until the first media timeout. Glenville finished the first quarter with a slight edge taking a 15-10 lead.

Coach Stephen's squad continued to build their advantage throughout the second. However, the Cardinals were able to make it a one-point game at the 9:09 mark. Back-to-back buckets by Lauren Calhoun and Graci Fairman shrunk Glenville's lead.

While Wheeling finished the second quarter shooting 50%, the Lady Pioneers converted five more shots than the Cardinals. GSU used their improved shooting in the second to take a ten-point advantage of 38-28 heading into the half.

Coming out of the half, a three-pointer by the Lady Pioneer's Aline Fevrier got GSU started in the third. For the third consecutive quarter, Glenville hit three threes. Once again Wheeling University surged back into the contest producing a 6-0 cutting GSU's lead down to seven.

Coach Sethepns's team responded once again taking a 17-point advantage with 1:17 left in the quarter.  Breanna Campbell, Deja Atkinson, and Aline Fevrier all were key contributors during Glenville's hot stretch. With Cardinals hitting a jumper and converting two free throws the Lady Pioneers enter the final quarter up 61-48.

In the fourth quarter, GSU hit a game-high six threes shooting 66.6% from beyond the arc. With Glenville's strong shooting from deep the Lady Pioneers at the 4:28 mark took their largest lead of the night 78-58. However, both teams hit a cold spell in the last three minutes of the contest combing for only nine points. With Wheeling hitting the last two shots of the game Glenville's advantage would be cut down to 16 before the final horn.

Transfer Dream Cherry led the Lady Pioneers in scoring with 15 points and went 3-4 from beyond the arch. Mickayla Perdue and Breanna Campbell would be close behind finishing with Perdue scoring 13 and Campbell with 12. Mo Pruitt had a team-high seven rebounds in tonight's game.
