GLENVILLE – Coach Kim Stephens and her #1 ranked Lady Pioneers kept their perfect season alive Saturday afternoon, rolling to a 105-47 victory over Wheeling University at the Waco Center. The contest was a "Pink Game" as the Lady Pioneers and the GSC Community observed Cancer Awareness for the afternoon.
Glenville gained separation early. They were leading 12-10 at the first media timeout, but followed that break with a 13-0 run to close the quarter with a 25-10 advantage. They opened things up with an efficient second quarter, forcing a volume of Cardinal turnovers, and extending the lead to 53-25 at the half. They continued to pad the margin throughout the second half.
Thirteen different GSC players found the scoring column, led by four players in double-figures; Re'Shawna Stone with 18, 15 each from Zakiyah Winfeld and Taychaun Hubbard, and 12 from Dazha Congleton. Abby Stoller added eight and Skylar Davidson seven. Hubbard led the rebounding surge with seven, followed by Winfield and Congleton with six each. Winfield's strong flor game also included team highs with five assists and four steals.
Lauren Calhoun led the Wheeling effort, scoring just below her league leading average with 18 points.
GSC registered a strong 53-26 advantage in team rebounding, and shot 42-of-75 from the field for 56.0%. Conversely, they held Wheeling to only 19-of-60 from field, 31.7%. The defense also forced a total of 22 Wheeling turnovers. The Lady Pioneers got back on track from three-point range, connecting on 11-of-30 attempts (36.7%).
Glenville is now in the middle of a tough stretch, playing five games in nine days. They will have three games next week, two of which will be on the road.
GSC improves to a perfect 22-0 overall, and 17-0 in the league. Wheeling falls to 6-16 overall, and 6-12 in the MEC.
The Lady Pioneers face a tough road test on Saturday, traveling to Institute to face West Virginia State. It will be a matchup of the league's top two teams, as State currently sits in the #2 spot. Tip-off is set for 5:30 at WVSU.
