Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lady Pioneers Beat Senators on The Road

ELKINS – Glenville's #1 ranked Lady Pioneers fought through a tough road test Wednesday night, pulling away late to down a pesky Davis & Elkins squad 82-69. The Lady Pioneers were down 60-55 with only 8:25 remaining in the game, but pulled themselves together and closed the game with a 27-9 run.

Glenville's shots were off the mark early, as they only tallied points in the first quarter, finding themselves down 12-8. The clawed their way back in the second quarter, and carried a 31-29 lead into intermission. GSC shot 27.0% in the first half (10-of-37).

Still, GSC could not put the Senators away. The Lady Pioneers built their lead to 41-34 at the 6:47 mark of the third, but by the end of the stanza, D&E was back in front 54-53. Their 6-2 surge to start the fourth pushed their advantage to the aforementioned 60-55 lead at the 8:25 mark.  At this point the defense stiffened, shots started to fall, and Glenville was able to pull away and seal the win.

Re'Shawna Stone led the Lady Pioneers with team highs of 19 points and eight rebounds. She was followed closely by Zakiyah Winfield with 18 points and seven rebounds. Winfield would tally 16 of her points in the second half. Taychaun Hubbard and Kaylee Pierce were both also in double figures with 10 apiece. Dazha Congleton posted a team-high six assists, followed by Stone with five. Congleton, Winfield, and Hubbard all recorded four steals.

Glenville would end the game shooting 39.4% (28-of-71), and 28.1% from beyond the arc (9-of-32). D&E shot 53.2% for the game (25-of-47). The Senators connected on a strong 63.2% from three-point range (12-of-19). The long range bombs played a key role in keeping D&E in the game, as they hit several three's whenever GSC appeared to be gaining separation.

D&E was led by Allie Taylor with 21, Marissa Berlin 18, and Peyton Mohler 17.

Glenville improves to a perfect 24-0 on the season, 19-0 in the Mountain East. Davis & Elkins falls to 6-18 overall, 3-16 in the MEC.

The Lady Pioneers return home Saturday, hosting West Virginia Wesleyan for Winter Homecoming.

Tip-off is set for 1:00 on the Waco Center's McPherson Court.
