GLENVILLE – Holly Brehm opened her Glenville career with a bang Friday morning, firing a complete game shutout and striking out 18 batters as GSU defeated Clarion 6-0 at the Sue Morris Complex. The Ohio University transfer, who hails from Wyoming County, only allowed two hits as she broke the school record for strikeouts in a single game.
Brehm was able to cross the Golden Eagle hitters with a variety of pitches. While her rise ball accounted for a lot of the strikeouts early, she was able to get many of her late-inning punchouts by changing speeds.
Glenville's offense scored one run in the second to take the lead, and extended the lead to 4-0 with three runs in the fifth. They provided to add-on runs in the sixth to seal the win.
Offensively, seven different GSU players found the hit column; Addison Aguiniga, Katie Richardson, Ashton Palmer, Sophia Delvecchio, Natalie Fout, Haylee Stevens, and Danica Ruest. Aguiniga had the team's lone extra-base hit with a double, and also registered two RBI's.
In the afternoon tilt, Glenville suffered their first loss of the season, falling to West Chester 15-2. Makenna Negley had a multi-hit game and an RBI for GSU, and Richardson added another RBI. West Chester's Abigail Quinn hit a pair of three-run home runs and delivered six RBI's while shortstop Emily Kim went four-for-five with five RBI's.
Glenville is back in action on Saturday, hosting Mercyhurst at 2:30 and Shippensburg at 7:30.
