GLENVILLE – Coach
Justin Caldwell's Glenville State University squad could overcome a strong second half surge from Concord on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Mountain Lions 90-80. It was a day in which Glenville's John Williams Jr. became the fastest player to 1000 points in school and Mountain East Conference history.
Glenville would lead for most of the first half, but Concord mounted a late half run to take a 38-34 halftime lead. GSU came back and the game was tied 44-44 four minutes into the second half, but Concord produced a 7-0 run to gain separation and would lead the rest of the way.
Williams Jr. went on a torrid late game surge, pulling the Pioneers back to within two possessions. He would close the game with 36 points, 28 of which came in the second half. The performance sealed his second consecutive MEC scoring title. He was complemented by
Adrian Scarborough's 19-point, 15-rebound double-double.
Tommy Williams added 11 points, and
Nick Edwards 10. Edwards delivered five assists in his return, and was matched by five assists from
Tommy Williams.
Concord was led by Amare Smith with 18 points, and Matt Weir 16. Concord held a 44-35 advantage on the boards.
Glenville ends their regular season 12-15 overall, and 8-14 in the Mountain East Conference. Concord improves to 14-14 overall, and 11-11 in the MEC.
Both teams will be back in action next week in the MEC Tournament in Wheeling.
