No. 1 Lady Pioneers Cruise Past Frostburg State

GLENVILLE – After Wednesday night's close game at Fairmont for the #1 ranked Glenville State Lady Pioneers, Saturday's home game against Frostburg was much different. GSC made the business decision to settle the issue early, rolling to a convincing 117-57 victory over the visiting Bobcats.

Glenville came out sprinting at the start, scoring the game's first 10 points. By the end of the quarter, they had produced 30 points and a 30-9 lead. By the half, the advantage had ballooned to 66-21. GSC's hallmark ball-hawking pressure defense would prove too much for Frostburg, as the Lady Pioneers forced a volume of turnovers in the half, and capitalized with points in transition.

For the game, the Glenville defense would force 30 Frostburg turnovers, leading to 43 GSC points. The air-tight GSC defense would hold the Bobcats to only 22 field goals.

15 different GSC players found the scoring column, six of which hit double figures. This group was led by Zakiyah Winfield with 17 points, Kaylee Pierce 14, Mashayla Cecil 13, Abby Stoller 11, and Dazha Congleton and Zephaniah Gray with 10 each.

Winfield posted a team-high 10 rebounds, followed by Congleton and Stone with five each. Stone led the team with six assists, followed by Skylar Davidson with four. Davidson led the pressure defense effort, recording four steals. Five other Lady Pioneers would register two steals on the day; Taychaun Hubbard, Pierce, Aline Fevrier, Congleton, and Vendela Danielsson.

After a rough night from the field at Fairmont, GSC found their shooting rhythm back on Saturday. They would connect on 41-of-74 shots from the field (55.4%). While many of their points came in transition, they also found the touch beyond the arc again, hitting 10 three-pointers in 25 attempts (40.0%). GSC led in team rebounding 49-36, with 20 of the Lady Pioneer boards coming on the offensive end.

Samiya Esema led the Frostburg attack, posting a double-double. She registered team-highs with 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Glenville improves to a perfect 20-0, and 15-0 in the Mountain East Conference. Frostburg falls to 5-16 overall, and 4-12 in the league.

Coach Kim Stephens' squad is back on the road Wednesday, facing a tough road test at West Liberty. Tip-off is set for 5:30.
