Holding the region's top seed, Glenville State held serve Friday night, rolling to a convincing 88-60 victory over Lincoln in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. The Lady Pioneers utilized an energized first quarter before their home crowd, racing to a 26-10 lead by the end of the first quarter. They extended the lead to 56-21 by halftime.
Lincoln bounced back to outscore the Lady Pioneers in the second half, holding GSU to only 32 second half points. Glenville's large advantage early on proved too much to overcome.
Glenville put four players double figures;
Zakiyah Winfield 18,
Taychaun Hubbard 14,
Dazha Congleton 12, and
Kaylee Pierce 10. Congleton also posted team highs with eight rebounds and seven assists.
Jade Young led Lincoln with 15 points, followed by Kryshell Gordy with 12, and Ciani Montgomery 11.
Lincoln closes their season at 21-8. Glenville advances to Second Round with an overall mark of 30-1. It marks the third 30-win season of Coach
Kim Stephens' career. GSU will play the winner of the Gannon-Shepherd game on Saturday night.
Tip-off will be at 7:30.
QUARTERFINAL – GAME FOUR - RECAP
Shepherd 93, Gannon 89 (2-OT) - Box Score
Shepherd and Gannon played an instant classic to close Day One of the tournament, with the Rams prevailing in double overtime, 93-89. They were able to fully consummate what was an exciting second half comeback.
Early in it was Gannon, as the Knights led 23-13 after the first quarter, and 43-31 at the half. Shepherd began to reel in the deficit during the second half, and the two teams traded punches down the stretch. The drama extended into a pair of overtimes, with Shepherd eventually closing the issue with some key plays at the end of the second stanza.
Abby Beeman led the Rams with an impressive stat line of 34 points, 13 assists, eight rebounds, and eight steals. Sidney Clayton tallied 23 points, and Marley McLaughlin 22.
Emma Wright and Sydney Pirosko each scored 25 points to led Gannon.
Gannon closes their strong season with a mark of 24-7. With their historic victory, Shepherd improves to 25-7.
Shepherd advances to the Second Round, and will face Glenville tomorrow night at 7:30.
