GLENVILLE – Glenville State's Lady Pioneers are going to the Elite Eight!
Coach Kim Stephens' squad captured the Regional title in emphatic fashion, rolling to an 89-58 victory over league rival Charleston. They settled the issue early, dominating the first half, and taking a 56-29 lead into the halftime locker room.
Charleston materialized a pair of strong second half runs, but could never get the margin inside of 17. Glenville was able to pull back away down the stretch, and won going away.
GSU had five players in double figures; Zakiyah Winfield with 19, Dazha Congleton 14, Taychaun Hubbard 12, Vendela Danielsson 11, and Re'Shawna Stone. Abby Stoller added eight points. Winfield delivered a team high nine rebounds, followed by Stoller and Stone with seven each. Congleton delivered a team-high eight assists, with Stone adding five.
Glenville shot 48.6% from the field, including 37.0% from three-point range (10-of-27). They held UC to 34.4%. Glenville led in team rebounding 41-36, and dished out a high volume of 24 assists.
Markiya McCormick and Clarissa Francis led Charleston with 15 and 12 points respectively.
This was Glenville's third NCAA Regional title in history, and their first since 2007.
Glenville advances to the Elite Eight in Birmingham with a 32-1 overall record. Charleston closes their season 23-9.
GSU will now wait on their seed. The quarterfinal round takes place on Monday in Birmingham, Alabama.
