Lady Pioneers Face Grand Valley in NCAA Semi-Final

Live Video | Live Stats | Radio

BIRMINGHAM – Glenville State's Lady Pioneers have advanced to the NCAA Final Four, powering home a convincing 103-56 win over West Texas A&M in the quarterfinal matchup Monday afternoon. Coach Kim Stephens' squad sprinted out quickly, rolling to a 69-24 halftime advantage, and putting six players in double figures for the game.

Glenville will now venture into the semifinals in a new role; for the first time this season, the Lady Pioneers enter a contest as the underdog. They entered the '22 season as league favorite, the MEC Tournament as the #1 seed, and the Atlantic Regional as the #1 seed. Entering the Elite Eight as the #3 seed, they were able to dispatch the #6 seed Lady Buffaloes. Now, they will face a higher seeded team in the NCAA Final Four, the Grand Valley Lakers out of Michigan, the #2 seed.

Glenville enters the National Semifinal with a 33-1 record. It is the program's sixth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament, and it is the storied program's third trip to the Elite Eight. Coach Stephens' squad leads the nation in scoring at 96.3 points per game, and in scoring margin at 33.5. Stephens and her staff utilize a high volume of players in the revolving door rotation. Their balanced scoring attack is deep; Zakiyah Winfield (18.0), Re'Shawna Stone (16.5), Dazha Congleton (12.1), Taychaun Hubbard (11.4), Mashayla Cecil (7.8), Vendela Danielsson (7.3), Abby Stoller (7.2), Kaylee Pierce (5.6), Tyesha Taylor (4.2), Skylar Davidson (2.3), Deja Atkinson (2.1), and Aline Fevrier (2.0).

Stone leads the team in assists (117), followed by Congleton with 101, and Winfield with 80. Stone also leads in steals with 70, followed by Congleton with 61, Winfield 60, and Hubbard 59. Winfield has registered a team-high 7.2 rebound average, complemented by Stoller at 5.8, and Congleton and Hubbard each at 5.3.

Grand Valley enters the game with a 31-2 mark, and a strong quarterfinal win of their own, a 67-44 victory over the #7 seed Missouri Western. It is a team predicated on defense and rebounding; they lead the nation in scoring defense at 49.6 points per game, plus they have utilized their height to own a +6.4 team rebounding average. Coach Mike Williams' roster shows seven players over six-foot , and an additional six that are at least 5'10". Fifteen of the 18 players on the Laker roster are Michigan natives. Laker point guard Qay Stanton, like Glenville's Mashayla Cecil, is a transfer from D-I Eastern Kentucky.

Grand Valley has three players averaging in double figures; Emily Spitzley (13.4), Ellie Droste (12.4), and Rylie Bisballe (11.4). Spitzley and Droste also lead the Lakers in three-pointers with 67 and 43 respectively. GVSU has blocked 146 shots as a team.

So the stage is set for a unique Final Four matchup…the nation's #1 team in scoring offense against the nation's #1 team in scoring defense.

Tip-off is set for 7:00 EST on Wednesday night in Birmingham's Bill Harris Arena.
