Holly Brehm Breaks Program Record for Strikeouts In A Single Season, Pioneers Take 2-0 Victory Over West Liberty

WEST LIBERTY – Glenville's Holly Brehm broke the program record for strikeouts in a single-season Monday afternoon, firing a five-hit shutout, leading the Pioneers to a 2-0 victory over Northern Division power West Liberty. Brehm struck out 11 Hilltopper hitters in the contest, while walking only one.

West Liberty entered the contest 11-3 in the MEC, but the game materialized into a pitcher's duel between Brehm and the Hilltoppers' Annie Patterson, the #5 and #6 pitchers in the league in ERA. Glenville was able to push along the game's only two runs in the top of the fourth, putting the ball in play and forcing the hand of the West Lib defense.

Monica Rodelo opened the frame with a single, and was replaced by pinch-runner Lu Kisner. Ashton Palmer and Makenna Negley followed with each hitter getting on via error, with Kisner scoring on the second miscue. Palmer scored later in the inning on an RBI-single from Addison Aguiniga.

From there, Brehm closed the door, striking out six Hilltoppers over the final three innings. Each team recorded five hits, but the GSU defense played error-free ball for the contest. Game Two was postponed to a later date because inclement weather.

Brehm now has 127 strikeouts for the season, breaking the 16-year old record of Samantha Stewart, who had held the record since 2006. Glenville improves to 7-20 overall, and 3-12 in the MEC. West Liberty falls to 21-13-1 overall, and 11-4 in the league.

GSU is back in action tomorrow, hosting Wheeling for a doubleheader at the Sue Morris Complex. First pitch is set for 1:00.
