GLENVILLE – Glenville's softball team powered to a doubleheader sweep Tuesday afternoon, defeating Wheeling University 8-2 and 4-1. It was an outstanding day for the Pioneers in all phases of the game, as their pitching only allowed three runs over 14 innings, their offense delivered 20 hits, and defensively, they played error free softball.
In Game One, starter Holly Brehm went the distance, registering another quality start. She only allowed four hits, two runs, striking out 11 while walking only two. Offensively, Sophia Delvecchio whent three-for-four with a two-run home run, and four total RBI's; Katie Richardson went two-for-four with a solo home run and a pair of RBI's, with Jasmine Runk adding a pair of hits.
In Game Two, Addison Aguiniga put the GSU up early, opening the game with a double, advancing to third on a Runk sacrifice, then scoring on a wild pitch. Wheeling would tie the contest in the bottom of the first, and the two teams would remain tied until the sixth. It was a stellar pitching duel between Glenville's Madison Thimmes and Wheeling Jamie Anderson.
Wheeling mounted a threat in the bottom of the fifth and had a runner on second, but Brehm returned to the mound and induced a 6-3-5 double play to close the frame. GSU took advantage quickly taking the lead in the sixth, with Delvecchio plating pinch-runner Danica Ruest on a towering double. They would add a pair of insurance runs in the seventh, with Aguiniga scoring Kaelyn Stenger with an RBI-triple, and then scoring on a Runk squeeze bunt.
Thimmes' quality start was four and a third innings, allowing only four hits and one run, while walking two. Brehm went the final two and two-thirds to snag the win, retiring all hitters she faced, and adding four more strikeouts.
Glenville improves to 9-20 overall with the sweep, and 5-12 in the MEC. Wheeling falls to 9-20 overall, and 2-14 in the league.
Glenville returns to action on Friday, hosting Fairmont at the Sue Morris Complex.
