GLENVILLE- Glenville's softball squad was looking to pick up two key wins from the north division conference opponent Fairmont State University. With the help of two great pitching performances from starter Holly Brehm and Madison Thimmes, the Pioneers defeated Fairmont State 11-2 and 2-0. The Pioneers bullpen lead the charge in both games with a combined total of 10 strikeouts.
Game one started as a pitcher's duel between Glenville's Holly Brehm and Fairmont State's Shelby Reed. Once again, Brehm pitched a complete game only allowing two hits, two earned runs, and striking out seven Fairmont State batters. In the bottom of the third Pioneer Jasmine Runk drove in the leading run with an RBI single to make it a 1-1 tie. However, Fairmont State was able to Strike back at the top of the fifth inning with Carlie Scholosser's RBI double. With the Pioneers entering the bottom of the fifth down a single run, the bats caught fire for the Pioneers driving in 10 runs. Glenville State's Haylee Stevens started the charge with a two-RBI double giving Glenville the lead 3-2. Freshman Addison Aguiniga provided the final blow by hitting a grand slam for the Pioneers.
In the second game of this afternoon doubleheader, the Pioneers started with an early one-run lead and did not look back. Sophia Delvecchio homered to centerfield giving the Pioneers the early 1-0 lead. Starting pitcher Madison Thimmes helped the Pioneers secure a victory by only allowing four hits through seven innings. With runs being at a premium during this game, Freshman Monica Rodelo RBI single tacked on to the Pioneer's lead making it a 2-0 game.
At the top of the seventh, the Fairmont State tried to make a comeback with a base hit and steel by Katy Darnell early in the inning. The Pioneer's stunning infield play secured them another win growing their win streak to five consecutive games.
Glenville improves to 11-20 overall with Friday's sweep, and improves to 7-12 in the MEC. Fairmont State falls to 14-16 and 10-11 in the MEC.
Glenville returns to action Saturday, hosting Frostburg State University at the Sue Morris Complex.
