ELKINS – Glenville's pitching staff had an effective day Tuesday afternoon, leading the Pioneers to a doubleheader sweep at Davis & Elkins. Coach Jimmy Mullins' squad took Game One 3-2, and rolled to a 7-1 victory in the nightcap. In taking the series, Glenville established a new single season record for wins. They now have 21…the old mark was 19.
In the opener, Julian Minaya went five and a third innings on the mound, allowing only two hits and one run, while striking out five. He was relieved by Abe Stearns, Tristan Gasset and Chase Swain. Swain recorded the save, inducing a game-ending double play in the bottom of the seventh. Trevon Smith delivered all three RBI's in the opener; his first inning single scored Mitch Lohr, and his third inning single plated Lohr and Colby Werry.
In Game Two, freshman Austin Corn went four innings, allowing only one run and four hits, striking out four. He was relieved by Gasset who went three shutout innings to record the save. Gasset only yielded one hit, while striking out four.
Matthew Mangum was the top run producer in Game Two for the Pioneers, recording a double and game-high three RBI's. Catcher Calen Kampes had three hits, including a double, triple, and scored three runs. Kampes went 8-for15 in the series. Werry added a double and an RBI with Hunter Brown recording the other RBI.
In taking three of four in the series, Pioneer pitching only allowed 21 total hits over the four games.
With the sweep, Glenville improves to 21-9 overall, 9-7 in the Mountain East Conference. D&E falls to 6-22 overall, and 13 in the MEC.
Glenville goes on the road this weekend, traveling to West Virginia State on Friday.
