Beckley- The Glenville State University Pioneers defeat the Falcons of Notre Dame College 9-5 making program history. The Pioneers have picked up their first postseason victory in school history. The Pioneers where still able to pull off the victory even though they were out hit 13 to 12.
What Happened
Both teams started the game scoreless through the first two innings. The Pioneers struck first in the bottom of the third inning earning a 2-0 lead.
Mitch Lohr doubled to center field to bring
Colby Werry for the first run. Tre'Von Smith's fielder's choice to second base scored Lohr from first base.
However, Notre Dame answered back in the top of the fourth inning scoring four runs to make it a 4-2 game. Nick Farrell scored in the first run for Notre Dame of off a walk. Pitcher
Diego Tamariz was relieved for the Pioneers after pitching three and two-thirds innings. Tamariz during his start was able to accumulate two strikeouts in the first 20 batters. Ben Ross's double to center field scored three Falcons as the ball took a bad hop of the wall.
During the fifth and sixth innings Glenville scored seven of their nine runs giving them a five-run lead with three innings left in the game. In the bottom of the fifth
Tre'von Smith singled through the right side to score two runs to tie the game. The sixth inning proved to be the difference maker for the Pioneers.
Chase Swain scored the first run with a deep drive to center field. The next two pioneers scored from the pitcher walking
Zach Morris and a wild pitch.
Calen Kampes ended the Glenville's scoring streak with another single to center field.
Notre Dame was able to score one more run in the top of eighth from a double to center field. The Glenville bullpen proved to be to much for the Falcons of Notre Dame college.
Austin Corn picked up the win for the Pioneers his sixth of the season. Corn struck out two batters and did not walk a single batter in five and a third innings.
What's Next
The Pioneers continue their postseason run tomorrow at Linda K. Epling Field. The time and opponent of tomorrows matchup is still pending. The Pioneers will play the winner of Charleston vs Fairmont State.
