Beckley- The Glenville Pioneers had to defeat the Golden Eagles of Charleston twice today to win the 2022 Mountain East Confrence championship. The Pioneers where able to pull off the win in the top of the ninth 5-4. In the second game Glenville fell to Charleston 13-4 potentially ending Glenville's historic 2022 campaign.
What Happened
Game 1 GSU 5 Charleston 4
Runs where at a premium the entire game which came to no surprise. Both Glenville's and Charleston's bullpens the entire year had been two of the best in the league.
Josue Matos got the start for the Pioneers which was his first of the postseason.
Diego Tamariz came in the second to relieve Matos after a solo home run by Charleston's Pete Costigan.
Tamariz was the definition of lights out for the Pioneers pitching six and two-thirds innings. During his outing Diego accumulated six strikeouts, only allowed five hits, and only walked three batters. Glenville was able to finally break the scoring drought in the top of the sixth inning.
Calen Kampes scored two runs from his single down the left side of the field to tie the game 2-2.
Entering the last three innings Glenville scored three key runs to win them the game. Two of the runs for the Pioneers came in the top of the seventh.
Zach Morris came in clutch for the Glenville by scoring a run off of a single to center field with two outs and moving
Mitch Lohr to third base. The final run of inning came from a balk from freshman pitcher Cole Peschl to make it a 4-3 game.
The bottom of the eighth inning Charleston tied the game 4-4 with a double to center field from designated hitter Drew Klaserner. After the double
Adam Riggleman the MEC pitcher of the year enter the game to close. Once again Riggleman was able to keep the Charleston bats quiet when it mattered.
Colby Werry scored the final run for the Pioneers from a throwing by the University of
Charleston third baseman.
Game 2 GSU 4 Charleston 13
The Pioneer bats where silenced by the Charleston bullpen in the second game. The Golden Eagles all year were known for their bullpen. With Charleston coming from the winner's bracket of the tournament and ten running two opponents, the Golden Eagles bullpen was well rested and still had fresh arms.
The Pioneers where able to score first in the second inning of game two.
Ryker Rivera and
Colby Werry both drove in runs for Glenville. The third inning however was not favorable for the Pioneers. The University of Charleston bats finally caught fire during the second game. Charleston scored seven runs this inning. In the bottom of the fifth the Hitman
Tre'von Smith was able to answer back for
the Pioneers with a two-run home run. The Pioneers where able to score one more run before the game ended from a
Fabian Escalante Single to center field.
What's Next for Glenville
While the Pioneers had an impressive non-conference resume, they just fell short to making it into the NCAA Regional Tournament. The Pioneers finished with five players being named to the all-tournament team. Seniors
Adam Riggleman,
Colby Werry, and
Tre'von Smith all made the all-tournament team along with Junior
Zach Morris and Sophomore
Calen Kampes. The 2022 season for the Pioneers will gown down in the record books as one of the best teams to play for Glenville State University.
