Headline GSU Soccer Kicks Off 2022 Season at Converse

Glenville, W.Va.- The Pioneers kick off the 2022 season this Saturday against the Valkyries of Converse University. This will be the second time in program history that these two teams have faced each other.

In the last meeting between these two squads Coach J.R Dodson made his coaching debut for the Pioneers. Glenville State University defeated converse 3-0 giving Dodson his first collegiate win of his career. From the starting eleven six players return from last season. For the Pioneers many players picked up their firsts of the season. Mikayla Brown picked up her first clean sheet of the season. At the time Freshman Merel Smets picked up her first career assist for GSU.

While only returning six starters from last season's opener, the Pioneers return an amble amount of youth and upperclassmen. Mackenzie Hendricks returns for her third season with the Pioneers. Last season, Hendricks finished the year sixth in minutes played with over 1,000 minutes. Merel Smetts finished the 2021 campaign with All-MEC Freshman Team honors and led the team in goals. Senior Alexa Smith started every game for the Pioneers and led the team in minutes played.

With Coach Dodson returning for his second season under the helm, there is a lot of excitement around the program. Under his direction, GSU broke a program record for the most wins in a season. This offseason also marked the first recruiting class under Dodson's direction. The class included a total of 14 signees.
