Lady Pioneers Sweep Day Two of Top Hat Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Elkins, W.Va.- The Lady Pioneers closed the second day of the Top Hot Classic with two wins. In the first match Glenville defeated Lock Haven 3-1. Glenville State University's second match came against Virginia State where the Pioneers defeated the Trojans in dramatic fashion.

Match One

The Lady Pioneers were off and running early in the match picking up the first two sets of the match 25-21 and 25-12. In the First frame of the match, Glenville would trail the Bald Eagles 6-2 until a kill by Junior Julia King would spark the Lady Pioneers to a 4-0 run to tie the match. The first set would stay back-and-forth to the end where the Pioneers would eventually take the stanza. Glenville would ride the momentum from the first set and dominate the second frame. After the first point of the frame, the Pioneers would lead the entire match giving GSU a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the third set, the Bald Eagles would rally back and take the set 25-20. The third set would be a battle for both squads. The largest lead in the match was only three points until the very end. The Lady Pioneers would take an early 4-1 lead in the fourth set. However, Lock Haven would answer Glenville's early surge and tie the set 4-4. In a similar fashion to the third set, the fourth set would continue to test the Pioneers and Bald Eagles. An attack error by Lock Haven's Fialova Gabriela would be the start of the Lady Pioneers 7-1 run to win the set 25-20 and take the match 3-1

Senior Defensive Specialist Lindsay Winkler would lead Glenville and the match in digs with 18. Kataryzna Niderla produced a match and team-high in kills with 16. The Setter from Bakersfieldm, California Julia King would lead the Lady Pioneers in assists with 21 and aces with five.

Match Two

The Lady Pioneers would drop the first set against the Trojans of Virginia State 26-24. Virginia State was able to start the match with a 3-0 run. Glenville would answer back with a run of their own giving the Pioneers a 5-3 lead. Both squads could not find separation to take the first set until the very. After the Pioneers would tie the set 24 all, the Trojans would score the last two points to win 26-24. In the Second set of the match, Glenville would take an early 5-2 lead and never look back. The Lady Pioneers would withstand the counter-attack of Virginia State to take set two 25-20 and tie the match at 1-1.

Virginia State would come out firing on all cylinders in the third set. A kill by Virginia State's  Makenzy Johnson would spark a nine-point run by the Trojans. The Pioneers would fight their way back into the match, but the momentum from the early run by the Trojans would propel them to win the third set 25-13. In the fourth set, Glenville would come out and answer Virginia State's early run from the third set. The Pioneers would dominate the fourth set 25-8 forcing a fifth set.

Once again, the Lady Pioneers were facing a fifth set that would decide the match. Virginia State would start the fifth set with a 7-0 run. However, the Pioneers would answer the Trojans run with a run 7-0 run of their own sparked by back-to-back kills from Kataryzna Niderla. After both squads produce amazing stretches throughout the set, the final set would be tied 14-14. Sydney Goodrich's kill late in the set would swing the momentum in the Pioneer's favor winning them the match 16-14

Goodrich would lead the team in kills with 11 and produce 13 digs. Junior Defensive Specialist Zoe Schmidt would the team and match with 16 kills along with two aces. Nalaina Funk would produce two solo blocks and nine kills for the Pioneers.
