GSU Women’s Soccer Drops Close Match to the University of Charleston

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State University Women's Soccer fell to the University of Charleston Golden Eagles on Wednesday night, 1-0. The match proved to be a physical matchup with 26 fouls called during the duration of the match.

In the first half, the Pioneers and Golden Eagles were held score-less. Both teams created a fair amount of chances with Glenville striking first. Alyssa West in the fifth minute of the match created a shot but the University of Charleston goalkeeper would make the save. The Pioneers produced one more chance late in the half with Alexa Smith in the 43rd minute. Mikayla Brown and the Pioneer defense was a brick wall the entire first half. The Pioneers did not allow any goals and limited the Golden Eagles to seven shots.

Opening the second half of play, the Lady Pioneers created another chance. However, Merel Smets shot was wide left missing the net. In the 57th minute, the University of Charleston's Sydney Cavender would find the back of the net giving UC the lead 1-0. The physicality of the match continued throughout the second half. Both squads would be called for seven fouls with Glenville's Alyssa West picking up a yellow card in the 80th minute. The Lady Pioneers produced another chance late in the match, but offsides would be called on the Pioneers.

For Glenville, Alyssa West led the Pioneers in shots on goal. Alexa Smith, Merel Smets, Mackenzie Hendricks, and Graylin Floyd would play the entire match. Goalkeeper Mikayla Brown produced 10 saves for Glenville.
