Glenville State's Football Team defeated the UNC Pembroke Braves 45-17 on Saturday afternon at Morris Stadium. This marks the first win over the Braves in program history and the largest margin of victory in the series.
The Pioneers finished the day with 564 total yards of offense. Glenville's rushing attack led the charge producing 372 yards followed by 192 yards in the air. GSU's defense only allowed 36 rushing yards holding the Braves' potent rushing attack.
UNC-Pembroke started the game with a field goal on the opening possession. The Pioneers answered the Braves with a quick touchdown only taking 1:21 off the clock. A quarterback sneak would score the opening touchdown but the 44-yard pass to
Orion Bonner set up the Pioneers. The first four possessions of the game resulted in both teams putting points on the board. UNC Pembroke answered Glenville's quick score with a touchdown of their own making it a 10-7 game. Before the end of the quarter,
Josh Jones would hit a 29-yard field goal to tie the game.
After the Pioneer defense forced the Braves to punt, Glenville opened the second quarter with a touchdown.
Jeff Miller found
Zay Huff and
Javian Bellamy for 30-yard receptions during the opening drive of the quarter. Once again in the second quarter, Glenville's defense provided a key stop. On fourth and three
Brandon Penn broke up
Josh Jones's pass. The Pioneers' offense found the end-one two more times before the end of the quarter.
Jeff Miller found Freshman
Tariq Miller for a 44-yard touchdown pass and
Zakee Swann found the endzone on a two-yard run. Glenville entered the half with a 31-10 lead.
The Pioneers started the ball in the second half and did not miss a beat.
Zakee Swann broke away for an 83-yard touchdown. The running game continued to shine in the third quarter. Both
Zakee Swann and
Alfred Menjor busted out multiple 30-yard-plus run plays. Towards the end of the quarter, Jeff Miler found the endzone connecting with
De Vante Roberson. Roberson's catch would be a heads-up play taking advantage of the tip ball from the Braves' defense.
In the fourth quarter, UNC Pembroke found the endzone early. Quarterback
Josh Jones led the Braves down the field and connected with Dixon Trey to cut into the Pioneer's lead. After two straight three-and-outs, Glenville closed out the game with the run.
Saeed Galloway, Brennan Norris, and Jalien Nais helped the Pioneers to chew eight minutes of clock ending the game in Glenville's favor 45-17
Glenville finished the game with two rushers over 100 yards.
Zakee Swann produced 167 yards and two touchdowns followed by Menjor Alfred with 143 yards.
Jeff Miller finished the game with 192 passing yards, three touchdowns, and a completion percentage of 78%. Glenville's top receiver would be Javin Bellamy with 53 yards and a touchdown. Defensively
Brandon Penn led the Pioneers in tackles. Penn produced eight tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, and one pass
breakup.
Seth Arnold finished the day with six tackles followed by Dane Lynch with five.
Joshua Carr led the team in tackled for loss with two.
