Wheeling University Cardinals Rally Past Glenville State in the Second Half

Wheeling, W.Va. - The Pioneers fell to the Cardinals of Wheeling University 34-23. Glenville would go into the half tied at 10-10, but mistakes made late by the Pioneers and 24 points by Wheeling in the second half propelled the Cardinals to the victory.

Glenville opened up the first quarter with possession and continued where they left off from the previous week. Within the first minute of the game, Jeff Miller connected with Orion Bonner for the 64-yard touchdown pass making it 7-0 in favor of the Pioneers. In the third play of Wheeling's first offensive drive, Sean Bowers intercepted Javon Davis's pass. With the early interception, the Pioneer's second offensive drive started at Wheeling's 21-yard line. Glenville drove the ball down to the Wheeling 3-yard line, but the Pioneers would have to settle for a field goal. However, Josh Jones's field goal would make it a two-possession game early in the first quarter.

After the Cardinals punted to start the second quarter, the Pioneers once again were deep in Wheeling's territory. An unfortunate fumble by Glenville would give possession back to the Cardinals. Once again the Pioneer's defense held strong stopping Wheeling on a 4th down deep in Glenville territory. On Wheeling's next possession, the Cardinals found the endzone with a pass from Javon Davis to Mitchell Steven cutting Glenville's lead down to three. The Pioneers would be stopped by the Cardinals on the next drive. Wheeling took advantage of the 1:30 left on the clock and scored a field goal tying the game at 10-10 before going into the half.

On the opening drive of the second half, Wheeling produced a field goal giving them the lead 13-10. After Wheeling scored the Pioneers would be held to attempt another field goal. This time Glenville missed the 30-yard attempt. The Cardinals responded by scoring a quick touchdown only taking 2:15 off the clock. Glenville with 1:15 left in the quarter found the endzone for the first time in the second half. The 57-yard kickoff return by Zay Huff and a pass interference penalty on Wheeling would set up Saeed Galloway to punch it in for Glenville. With the touchdown, the Pioneers entered the last quarter only down by three points.

Wheeling started off the fourth quarter with a quick score regaining the 10-point lead. However, the Pioneers would still have plenty of time to chip away at the lead. Jeff Miller with 6:39 left in the game connected with Javian Bellamy for the touchdown making it a three-point game once more. The Pioneers would go for the onside kick but the Cardinals were able to recover the kick.
Glenville's Isaiah Macklin forced the fumble giving the Pioneers the ball back with 5:12 left on the clock. The Pioneers on the next play turned over the ball. Jeff Miller's pass would be intercepted by Myck Brown giving the Cardinals great field possession at the GSU one-yard line. Wheeling quickly scored regaining a two-possession lead.
