GSU Men’s Basketball Resumes Conference Play Against the Senators

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - Glenville State Men's Basketball team hits the road to resume Mountain East Conference play against Davis and Elkins. Since the Pioneers (2-4) start to the 2022-23 campaign GSU has been on a roll going (6-2) in their last eight. Glenville will be facing a formidable foe who had one of the best starts to the season in the program's history.

A Look at Your Pioneers

Glenville State is (3-2) against the Senators since D&E joined the MEC in the 2019-20 season. However, Davis and Elkins are (4-1) in the last five inside the McDonnell Center. In last year's matchup, the Pioneers came out on top 78-72. A strong second half propelled Glenville to take control of the contest. 

In the Pioneer's last time out they defeated Penn State Beaver 92-37. GSU's defense shinned in the second half holding the Nittany Lions to 13 points. Trevor Chandler led Glenville in scoring with 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to finish with his first double-double of the season. Since the start of January Jordan Turbo Smith has been lights out for GSU. In the month of January Smith is averaging 20.3 points per game.

As a team, the Pioneers continue to have a top offense in the conference. Through 14 games GSU is averaging 87.5 points per game. Glenville State is also one of the better teams in the MEC at distributing the ball producing 16.6 assists per contest. The Pioneers have been able to get out in transition since they are a top rebounding team. So far this season GSU is averaging 40.5 rebounds per game which is 19th in the nation.

A Look at Davis & Elkins


Davis & Elkins enter Wednesday night's game eighth in standings one game back of the Pioneers. The senators started out the season with a (6-1) record but have gone (3-5) since then. Daniel Mondragon enters his fourth season under the helm. In the program's second season in the Mountain East Conference, the Senators made the MEC Tournament. 

D&E is coming off an 82-72 loss against the University of Charleston Golden Eagles. In the first half, Davis and Elkins shot 48% from the field and 36% from three. While the Senators shot the three well in the first half they went 2-16 from beyond the arc in the second half. Brelan Walton led the Senators in scoring with 17 points.

Coach Mondragon's squad has been a top defense in the MEC holding opponents to 77.2 points per game. However, versus conference opponents, the Senators are allowing 82.6 points per contest which is fifth in the league. D&E has been able to hold opponents in check by defending three at a high level. Through 14 games opponents are shooting 31.6% from deep against the Senators.
