Glenville State Men’s Basketball Rally Past Davis & Elkins in the Second Half

Elkins, W.Va. - Glenville State Men's Basketball team defeated Davis & Elkins College on the road 84-81. The Pioneers were able to rally past the Senators 10 point advantage in the second half. GSU was able to have success against D&E forcing 17 turnovers in the winning effort.

Davis & Elkins struck first after winning the tip with a layup by Vadim Clanet, but the Pioneers got rolling early.  In the first five minutes, GSU produced an 11-1 run to take a 10-point lead. Before the first media timeout, the Senators started to get going on offense.

Coming out of the media timeout the Senators hit both of their free throws to cut Glenville State's advantage down to six. Both squads started to trade buckets making it difficult for either team to gain a substantial lead. Both Jaelin Johnson, Jordan Turbo Smith, and Jacquez Yow were all key producers during the stretch for the Pioneers. In the first half, Johnson was able to get going offensively by being active on the glass. The Fairmont native's five rebounds of the contest all came from the offensive end.

In the final ten minutes of the first half, the Senators took advantage of GSU's miscues. At the 7:42 mark, Davis & Elkins took the lead and led the remainder of the half. Twice D&E gained a seven-point advantage over the Pioneers. A small run 5-2 run by Glenville State cut down the Senator's lead to four before the half.

Coming out of the half the Pioneers battled to shrink the first-half deficit down to one possession. However, Davis & Elkins continued to answer Glenville State's counterattacks and regained their lead. Sam Role IV converted an and-one putting D&E up six before the first media timeout of the second half.

With the momentum swinging in favor of the Senators would take an 11-point lead 65-54 with 13 minutes to go in the contest. The Pioneers continued to battle and once again shrunk Davis & Elkins's advantage down to one. Both teams traded buckets until the final four minutes. A steal and a fast break layup by Jaelin Johnson put Glenville State up by four points. With the Pioneers getting to the paint GSU was able to answer any advancement made by the Senators. Turbo Smith came in clutch for Glenville hitting a free throw with three seconds left putting the Pioneers up three. D&E had one last chance at the buzzer but missed the three-pointer.

Jordan Turbo Smith led the Pioneers in scoring and had a game-high 21 points. Both Freddie Word and Jacquez Yow finished the contest with double-doubles. Word finished the game with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Yow a native of Newport News, Va. produced 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
