Lady Pioneers Pull Away Late in the Fourth Quarter to Defeat Concord 78-69

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State Women's Basketball team defeated the Mountain Lions of Concord 78-69. The Lady Pioneers' 100% shooting from the free throw line in the fourth helped GSU pull away late. For the entire game, Glenville State shot 90.5% from the charity stripe which is a new season high. Coach Stephens's squad also out-rebounded Concord 42-30.

In the opening minutes of the first quarter, the Lady Pioneers jumped out to 8-0 run. A layup by Mickayla Perdue got Glenville going and a three-pointer by Cabria Lewis closed out the hot stretch. The Mountain Lions started to get going on offense cutting GSU's advantage down to four. Before the first media timeout, the Pioneers quickly jumped out to a nine-point lead.

Glenville would take their largest lead of the contest at the 3:34 mark 21-6. Skylar Davidson was lights out in the first quarter producing eight points and helping the Lady Pioneers take a 15-point advantage. However, Concord took advantage of Glenville's scoring drought going on a  13-2. Heading into the second quarter Glenville State held onto a five-point lead. 

The Lady Pioneer's Mickyla Perdue hit a three to open the second but a 10-1 run by the Mountain Lions helped Concord take their first lead of the game. With a layup and a deep three by Jazz Blankenship the Mountain Lions gain momentum. With both squads trading buckets Concord held on to their one-point lead before the under-five media timeout. 

Glenville State was able to swing the momentum in their favor but an 8-0 run by the Mountain Lions gave CU the lead 41-37. In the last minute of the second quarter, Breanna Campbell hit a jumper inside the paint. Campbell's jumper made it a one-possession game before halftime. 

Coming out of the half Concord's Jaisah Smith hit a shot from beyond the arc giving the Mountain Lions their largest lead of the game. For the first half of the third quarter, CU was in control. While Glenville State went 0-5 from three in the third, the Lady persevered and regained the lead. Both squads struggled to shoot having cold stretches lasting minutes. With Glenville State scoring the final four points of the quarter, GSU was able to jump out to a three-point advantage.

Coach Stephens's squad led the entire fourth quarter but was able to take control of the game in the last five minutes. Once again both teams went back and forth keeping the game within one possession. To close out the contest the Lady Pioneers produced a 9-1 run hitting crucial free throws down the stretch. Mickayla Perdue's pair of free throws put GSU up 78-69 before the final horn.

Breanna Campbell had a monster game going off for 28 points and grabbing seven rebounds. Sophomore Skylar Davidson had a season and career-high 16 points. Aline Fevrier had a team-high 10 rebounds in the winning effort.
