Strong Second Half Surges the Pioneers Past the Cardinals of Wheeling 100-76

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State Men's Basketball team kicks off the new year with a 100-76 victory over Wheeling University. The Pioneers caught fire in the second half shooting 63.8% from the field and 50% from three. GSU's starting five combined for a total of 79 points in the winning effort. The backcourt duo Jordan Turbo Smith and Freddie Word were able to put together 41 points. 

Jordan Turbo Smith got the Pioneers going early on hitting a three to kickstart the offense. Turbo in the opening two minutes was on fire scoring the team's first eight points. With Freddie Word and Jamarvious Jones contributing early Glenville led 14-6. A three-point swing in favor of the Cardinals cut GSU's advantage down to five before the first media timeout. 

Coming out of the under-15 media timeout, Coach Caldwell's squad took their largest lead of the first half. Turbo continued to his shooting from three for the Pioneers to take a thirteen-point advantage with 9:20 left.

Coming out of the second media timeout Wheeling University started to hit its stride. The Cardinals produced an 8-0 run in less than two minutes. Brent Price sparked WU's dominant stretch scoring six of the eight points. Price a Wheeling W.Va. native would finish the game with 16 points.

Before the final media timeout of the first half the Pioneers regained a double-digit advantage 38-27. However, the Cardinals continued to battle eventually tying the contest before heading into the half. A 17-4 run by Wheeling University in the final four minutes provided the spark to erase the double-digit deficit.

Coming out of the half both squads battled in the first three minutes. The Pioneers once again regained a 12-point lead right before the under-15 media timeout. An 11-2 hot stretch by Glenville provided the spark for GSU to take control. Jamarvious Jones, Jacquez Yow, and Jaelin Johnson started to get going offensively during the streak. 

In the last 14 minutes of the game, it would be all Glenville State. With the Pioneers getting out in transition for easy looks the advantage grew to 20. Jaelin Johnson answered a three by Wheeling's William Gabbert with a jumper outside the paint and hit a three of his own. In a two-minute stretch, the redshirt freshman produced seven points.

In the last minute of the game, De'Ante Petree hit a three giving the Pioneers their largest lead of the 100-74. Before the final buzzer, the Cardinals scored a layup inside the paint.

Jordan Turbo Smith produced a game-high 28 points and was two assists shy of a double double with eight. Smith a native of Titusville, Fla. finished the game with a season-high six threes. Jacquez Yow, Harrison Eghan, and Jamarvious Jones would all finish with a team-high nine rebounds in the win.
