Preview: Pioneers Continue Crucial Stretch of Season with Contests at NDC & Against Wheeling

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - Glenville State Women's Soccer continues MEC action this week when they travel to Notre Dame College tomorrow (Oct. 11) and host Wheeling on Sunday (Oct. 15). The Pioneers have yet to beat the Falcons in four meetings and are 2-2 against the Cardinals all-time.

THE OPPONENTS 
NOTRE DAME COLLEGE 

The Falcons enter (5-3-3, 4-3-1 MEC) following a 3-1 victory at home over Davis & Elkins on Sunday. NDC fell to nationally ranked University of Charleston 2-1 earlier in the week. 

Mike Shiels is in his 21st season as Head Coach of Notre Dame College. Since joining the MEC, Shiels has led the Falcons to the MEC Tournament every year and captured the conference three times while also making the NCAA DII Tournament three times. He has earned MEC Coach of the Year on four occasions and his staff was awarded Atlantic Region Coaching Staff of the Year in 2020. Shiels played collegiately at Mercyhurst. 

Miriam Szijarto is one of the top goal scorers in the league with nine so far this season. Mia Maruna is second on the team with three. Louisa Follert is the leading assist getter with four in just two games. Goalkeeper Jordan Pasalaqua has corralled 51 saves at the net which is 5th best in the league. 

WHEELING 
The Cardinals come in (3-7-1, 1-6-1 MEC) after going 0-2 last week against Concord (4-0) and #14 Charleston (4-0). 

Emmanuel Awotula is in his second season as the Head Coach of the Cardinals. He led Wheeling to a 6-11-1 overall record and a MEC Tournament berth in his first year. He previously spent six years as the Head Coach at Lincoln University and two seasons as Head Coch at Oakland City University. Awotula started his coaching career at his alma mater, Tennessee Temple University, where he produced the most single season wins in school history. 

Nyah Smith and Talynn DeBartolo both have five goals each to lead the team. Mary DiFonzo and Medina Doka have also been a liable option on offense, adding four goals apiece. Smith also leads the team in assists with two. Olivia Kqira leads the conference in saves with 91. 

THE PIONEERS 
GLENVILLE STATE 

The Pioneers enter the week (4-4-3, 2-4-2 MEC) and are coming off a big 4-3 win over Fairmont State at home on Sunday. 

Merel Smets is tied atop the conference leaders in goal with nine after netting two in Sunday's win. Aitana Viejo added to her assist total last week as well, totaling five this season to lead the Pioneers. Viejo is second on the team in goals with four to add to her passing ability. Abigail Morales is up to 26 saves.
