Preview: Women’s Soccer to Travel to UC & WVWC this Week

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - Glenville State Women's Soccer will look to carry the momentum of Sunday's 2-0 win over Davis & Elkins this week when they travel to the University of Charleston tomorrow (Oct. 25) and West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday (Oct. 29).

THE OPPONENTS 
CHARLESTON 

The nationally ranked Golden Eagles enter (13-0-2, 11-0-1 MEC) and have won eight in a row dating back to Sept. 27. UC handed out two shutouts last week, defeating D&E 7-0 and WVWC 4-0. 

Gary Ogilvie is in his first year as HC of Charleston. Ogilvie was previously an assistant with the UC men's program where he helped lead the Golden Eagles to the National Championship game in 2020. He has also been an assistant at Snow College, giving his time to both the men's and women's team and being the Interim Head Coach for a short period of time.   

Charleston has been dominate all year, scoring 59 goals and holding opponents to just six scores all year. Sophia Mankowski leads the high-powered offense with nine goals but is backed up by Juliette Lucas' eight goals. Lina Jaime has seven goals and a team-leading eight assists. Jordan Maynard has started in 14 of the 15 games for UC, recording 45 saves. 

WEST VIRGINIA WESLEYAN  
The Bobcats come in (2-12-1, 0-10-1 MEC), falling to Concord 2-1 on Wednesday and Charleston 4-0 on Sunday.  

Adam Christensen is in his first season leading the Bobcats. He previously spent time as an assistant at Francis Marion University and Barton College with the men's programs. While at Barton, he coached 10 All-Conference players and had a 2nd place finish in the Conference Carolinas. Christensen was a head coach at the club and high school level as well.   

Ellie Pergolotti leads WVWC in goals with six while adding two assists. Beth Burchett has been another source of scoring, totaling four goals. The Bobcats have split goalie duties as Alyssa Williams is up to 77 saves and Paige Miller has brought in 38 saves. 

THE PIONEERS 
GLENVILLE STATE 

The Pioneers enter the week (5-7-3, 3-7-2 MEC) after Sunday's win over Davis & Elkins. Earlier in the week, GSU fell to West Virginia State 1-0 at home.  

Merel Smets added to her impressive season total of goals against D&E, putting her at 11 which is T-2nd best in the conference. Aitana Viejo also added to her season total in the victory, boosting her goals scored number to five. She also continues to lead the team in assists with five. Abigail Morales has started 12 games, recording 29 saves but Mikalya Brown has been at goal the past few games, upping her save total to 12 on the year.
