Men's Golf Completes Second Round of MEC Championships

10/3/2023 7:19:00 PM

WARREN, Ohio – The Glenville State's Men's Golf team remains in the race, after two rounds of play at the Mountain East Conference Championships. Coach John Lilly's squad is sitting in fifth place, but the top of the leaderboard is crowded. GSU is only 12 shots behind team leader Davis & Elkins. The Championships are again being contested at the Avalon Lakes Country Club in Warren, Ohio.

Davis & Elkins leads the field with a team score of 608 (310-299), but is followed closely by Wesleyan at 609 (310-299), Charleston at 612 (303-309), Fairmont at 614 (313-301), and Glenville at 621 (309-312). Tomorrow, only the top six teams compete in the Final Round. These were some solid scores over Avalon's historic 7002-yard layout.

Individually, Glenville's Benjamin Fernandez leads the way. The freshman is currently fourth in the 50-player field, posting a 36-hole tally of 149 (74-75). He is followed by teammates Juan Monckeberg (20th, 80-77—157), Shaydon Johnson (20th, 78-79—157), Bumin Choi (29th, 80-81—161), and Mathias Nunez (29th, 77-84—161).

The Championships conclude Wednesday, as the top six teams on each side battle over the final 18-homes of the event.
