Preview: Pioneer Volleyball Set for Packed Week with Four Games

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - The Glenville State Volleyball team will be busy this week, playing four games in a five-day stretch starting tomorrow (Oct. 10) with a tri-match. All four matches will be on the road.

THE OPPONENTS 
CONCORD  

The Mountain Lions enter (12-5, 3-2 MEC) after going 2-0 last week with wins over West Virginia Wesleyan and Davis & Elkins. 

Kate Dillon is one of the longest tenured coaches in the MEC as she is in her 15th season leading the Mountain Lions. She has led CU to two winning seasons and is currently off to their best start since her arrival in 2009. In her tenure, Dillon has coached 11 All-Conference honorees. Prior to Concord, she was the Head Coach at Osbourn Park HS (Va.) where she led them to the final eight on four separate occasions. 

Meg Williams has put together a very strong season so far for the Mountain Lions, totaling 265 kills (4.27 kills per set). Chloe Thompson is nearing 200 kills as she has 190 to be a liable second option up front. Paige Richmond (358) and Declyn Tooze (269) have combined for over 600 assists sharing setter duties. Allie Davis is up to 271 digs and Kyndra Pilant has totaled 56 blocks to lead the team. 

BLUEFIELD STATE 
The Big Blue come in (7-11, 3-1 CIAA) following a split last week. They will play Virginia State tonight before playing the Pioneers and Mountain Lions tomorrow.  

Savanna Hammond is her third season as HC of the Big Blue. In 2021, they made it to the championship match of the USCAA. The following year in 2022, the Hammond-led Big Blue won the USCAA National Championship. She was named the USCAA Coach of the Year in 2021 as well. Before taking over the program at Bluefield State, Hammond played collegiately at Radford and has coached at the national level in club volleyball. 

Allyson Martin (141) and Jannice Lynch (138) are neck and neck for the team lead in kills this season. Kateryna Dashevska has been a phenomenal setter for the Big Blue, recording 475 total assists and 7.92 assists per set. Defensively, Imani Stokes has 40 blocks and Allyson Martin has 167 digs to lead the team. 

NOTRE DAME COLLEGE 
The Falcons enter the week (3-10, 2-3 MEC) and have lost two in a row. NDC fell to Wheeling 3-0 and Fairmont State 3-2 last week. 

Erica Kostelac is in her first season leading the NDC Falcons. She previously spent time at Cincinnati, Creighton and Cleveland State. Kostelac was the top assistant coach at Ursuline College in 2022 and was the Head Coach at RockCity Volleyball Club in Ohio for two years. 

Sydney Bray leads the attack with 202 kills this season. Samantha Comer has added 117 also. Jayme Zoeckler leads the team in assists with 458 and is third on the team in digs with 116 behind Kiley Kalina (194) and Sydney Bray (143). 

SALEM TIGERS 
The Tigers come in (5-11) overall after dropping two out of three games last week against West Liberty and Fairmont State. SU was able to defeat Carlow at home. Salem and Glenville State met earlier in the season with the Pioneers winning 3-2. 

Matt Carpenter is in his first year leading the Tiger program. Carpenter recently served as the Head Coach at nearby Ritchie County High School for nine seasons. During that tenure, he amassed 281 career wins with two State Runner-up finishes, seven WV State Tournament appearances, two conference championships, three sectional titles and four regional championships.   

Three Tigers have over 100 kills, led by Valentina Poti's 145. McKenzie Clyncke has been the driving force of the offense with her 262 assists. Alayna Cox leads the team by a wide margin in digs with 236 while also having 15 blocks during the 2023 campaign. 

THE PIONEERS 
GLENVILLE STATE 

The Pioneers enter (7-10, 2-3 MEC) after dropping matches to West Virginia State and Charleston last week. In the previous week, the Pioneers went 3-0. 

Katarzyna Niderla leads the team with 155 kills bur Rita Kelly is not too far behind with 136. Sarah Grainger is up to 453 assists while also adding 150 digs. Lindsay Winkler is almost up to 200 digs as she has 197 to lead the Pioneers.
