No. 23 Women’s Basketball Victorious over Chowan in North Carolina

MURFREESBORO, N.C. - The 23rd ranked Glenville State Women's Basketball team defeated Conference Carolinas foe Chowan 87-64 earlier today in North Carolina. GSU forced a season-high 43 turnovers today and recorded 28 steals in the victory.  

The Lady Pioneers started the game off slow, falling behind 8-4 early but went on a 9-0 run to take a 13-8 lead right after the first media timeout of the game. An explosive end to the quarter that included back-to-back threes by Zhordan Shannon put GSU up 26-15 after the first quarter. Glenville State started to apply more pressure on the Hawks in the second quarter, growing the lead to over 20. Free throws at the end of the half put the Lady Pioneers up 51-28 at the half, forcing 25 first half turnovers. 

The 2nd half was much evenly matched as Chowan held GSU to under 20 points in both the third and fourth quarters. CU cut the deficit to 18 but couldn't get it any closer in the 3rd quarter with the Lady Pioneers staying consistent. In the closing quarter, Glenville State grew the lead to a game-high 29 at 85-56 with three minutes remaining. A slow ending kept the Lady Pioneers under 90 points. 

The Final Stats 
Hya Haywood led all scorers with 23 points on 8-17 shooting from the field. Chalon Miles (12 points), Sanaiya Morris (11 points) and Lauren Calhoun (10 points) all reached double-figures as well. Miles and Calhoun led the rebounding efforts with six each while Haywood and Zhordan Shannon grabbed five apiece. Haywood almost had a double-double with steals, swiping eight. 

Chowan was led by Sydney Roberts' 14 points on 3-8 shooting from the field. Roberts went a perfect 7-7 at the free throw line. Imani Hickman was the only other double-digit scorer with 11. Desiree Askew had eight rebounds to lead the team with Hickman pulling down six. Danea Mackey had 10 turnovers in the loss.

Glenville State takes their 3-0 record home for the first time on Saturday (Nov. 18) for a top 25 matchup with 16th ranked West Virginia State at 2 p.m.
