GLENVILLE, W.Va. - The 23rd ranked Glenville State Women's Basketball team fell in a top 25 showdown to No. 16 West Virginia State 100-89 earlier today inside the Waco Center. The Yellow Jackets shot 46.1% from the field in the victory, holding the Lady Pioneers to just a 36.1% shooting day.
The first quarter was as expected, fast and a lot of substituting. WVSU made their first five in and five out change 23 seconds into the game, followed by GSU's first just over a minute in. WVSU opened up the game with a 7-0 lead, however a 16-0 run by the Lady Pioneers calmed the fast start of the Yellow Jackets. With WV State getting right back into it, the opening quarter ended with GSU up 28-27.
The second quarter was much like the end of the first quarter as both teams traded buckets, not gaining a lead bigger than three until the buzzer beater layup by Kamiyah Lyons gave Glenville a small 50-46 advantage going into the locker room.
West Virginia State would use a 9-0 run midway through the third quarter to grow their biggest lead of the game at 68-61. The Lady Pioneers would trail by four points for most of the remainder of the quarter until back-to-back layups by Payton James near the closure of the third quarter knotted the game up at 73 all heading into the fourth.
It was an 86-82 lead for WVSU at the under-five media timeout and that was the closest the Lady Pioneers got for the rest of the game. West Virginia State got up by as much as 13 in the final quarter of play, eventually leaving Glenville with an 100-89 victory.
