GLENVILLE, W.Va. - The No. 19 Glenville State Women's Basketball team scrapped to a 94-88 overtime win earlier today inside the Waco Center. GSU connected on 15 three-pointers in the victory.
It was a slow start for the Lady Pioneers, accounting for just two points in the first four minutes of the game, trailing 6-2 early. Salem built a lead of seven before the Lady Pioneers used a 13-0 run in the last 2:45 of the quarter to go up 20-14 after one quarter of play. In the second quarter, it was all Lady Pioneers. GSU scored 28 points and connected on seven three-pointers, securing a 48-34 lead going into the locker room.
The comfortability of the lead dwindled down quickly for Glenville State in the third quarter as Salem trimmed the deficit to just four at the under-five media timeout. GSU got back up by seven but the Tigers would come storming back once again, only trailing 64-60 at the conclusion of the third quarter. SU eventually took the lead at 67-66 on a mid-range jumper. As both teams went bucket for bucket but it was Salem that would be up 82-80 in the final three seconds. Zhordan Shannon nearly won the game on a buzzer-beater from the left wing but her foot was on the line, sending the game to overtime.
In overtime, GSU jumped out to a quick five-point lead and remained up for the rest of the extra period, pulling away for a 94-88 victory.
The Final Stats
Hya Haywood led the Lady Pioneer attack with 26 points while adding six rebounds and three assists. Dajaan Schuler was 5-8 from behind the arc, finishing the night with 15 points. Sanaiya Morris added 10 points with Kamiyah Lyons and Dream Cherry both aiding with nine points each. Zhordan Shannon almost had a double-double, closing the day with eight points and 11 rebounds.
Elena Pericic and Cassandra Smith both finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds each to lead the Tigers. Emerson Wells (15 points), Liliani Krause (12 points) and Carine Pinkney (11 points) all finished in double figures. Pinkney dished out seven assists as well.
