Lady Pioneers Strong Second Quarter Propels GSU Over Fairmont State 95-80

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State Women's Basketball team defeated Fairmont State 95-80. With the Lady Pioneers shooting 52% from the field and 42.8% from beyond the arc GSU shifted the momentum in their favor. Glenville would be outrebounded 35-30 but forced 30 turnovers during tonight's contest.

Fairmont State struck first by driving to the lane and converting high-quality shots from inside the paint. The Falcons scored their first three shots from inside the paint. Cabria Lewis got the Lady Pioneers going early hitting back-to-back jumpers. With both squads going back and forth it would be tied 13-13 at the first media timeout.

Glenville State and Fairmont State continued to trade buckets until the 1:19 mark. Jertaya Hall's three-pointer sparked a 7-2 run for the Falcons giving them a four-point advantage in the final minute. The Lady Pioneers' Cabria Lewis made a layup before the buzzer to cut Fairmont's lead to two before the second quarter. 

The Lady Pioneers did not start to take control of the contest until the final five minutes of the second quarter. Coming out of the under-five media timeout Glenville forced a turnover and found Mickayla Perdue for the open jumper. Perdue's jumper from inside the paint sparked an 18-2 stretch for GSU. During the run, the junior guard scored the first eight points for Glenville. A layup by the Falcons' Katy Darnell made cut the Lady Pioneers' advantage down to nine.

In the third quarter, Dream Cherry's layup gave Glenville State a 15-point lead before the first stoppage of the third quarter. While Fairmont State did not have as dominant of a run in the first quarter they were able to bring back to within nine on multiple occasions. With the Lady Pioneers scoring the last four points of the third quarter, Glenville's advantage grew to 12.

At the start of the final quarter of play, GSU took their largest lead of the contest 91-70. Once again Mickayla Perdue was able to kick start another run for the Lady Pioneers. Coach Stephens's squad produced a 15-4 streak taking advantage of the Falcons' mistakes. Fairmont would shrink GSU's lead down to 13 before the one-minute mark. However, Glenville's Cabria Lewis scored the final bucket to seal the 15-point victory. 

Junior Mickayla Perdue finished with a game and career high 29 points while shooting 50% from the field. Guard Cabria Lewis was the second Lady Pioneer in double figures scoring 16 points. Lewis also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds in the winning effort.
