Athens, W.Va. – Glenville State's Men's Basketball Team closed their season strong, earning a critical 85-81 road victory at Concord on Saturday. Coach
Justin Caldwell's squad recorded the win at Concord's Carter Center, on the Mountain Lions' Senior Day.
Glenville raced out to an early 21-11 lead at the 9:35 mark, but the Concord responded behind a loud home crowd. By halftime, they had drawn the deficit to two at 35-33. Throughout the second half, the team's traded punches, and the game remains close throughout. After 11 lead changes in all, Glenville pulled away in the final minutes, producing a 7-0 late run that took a 78-78 tie and pushing to a closing 85-78 lead. They held on the final minutes for the key win.
Jacques Yow was dominant for the Pioneers, powering home 33 points, six rebounds, and two blocked shots. Guard
Freddie Word almost produced a triple-double, showing a stat line of 14 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists. Turbo Smith contributed 10 points, and Deante Petree eight.
Concord was led J.J. Harper with 17 points and Jevon Laidler with 16.
Glenville shot 45.9% from the floor (28-of-61). This included and 11-of-26 day from beyond the arc (42.3%).
Glenville closes the regular season 16-12 overall, and 12-10 in the MEC. Concord closes 14-14 and 10-12.
Both teams advance to next week's MEC Tournament in WesBanco Arena.
