Pioneer Basketball Faces Wheeling in the First Round of the MEC Tournament

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State Men's Basketball starts postseason play tomorrow against the Cardinals of Wheeling University. The Pioneers enter the 2023 Mountain East Conference Tournament as the seven seed. With a win, GSU can advance to the next round where they would play Fairmont State University.

A Look At Your Pioneers 
 
The Pioneers have already faced the Cardinals twice this season and won both times. GSU won at home by 24 with strong performances from Jordan Turbo Smith, Jacquez Yow, Jaelin Johnson, and Freddie Word. However, Glenville narrowly escaped on the road with a career-high performance from Jamarvious Jones. 
 
Glenville State in their last time out was able to defeat Concord 85-81. Both offenses were on fire in the second half combing for 58 points. Freddie Word gained his 13th double-double in the last conference game against the Mountain Lions. After gaining that one, he is nationally ranked at number nine.  
 
The Pioneers are ranked fifteenth in the nation for total rebounds per game, averaging 40.64 rebounds per game. GSU also holds the third seat in the conference for their forced turnovers per game, they force 15.21 turnovers per game.  
 
GSU By the Numbers 
  • 3.4: Jacquez Yow is ranked third in the conference for blocked shots per game, a total of 34 and an average of 1.2 per game.  
  • 1: Freddie Word has had one triple-double this season and holds the number one spot in the nation for triple doubles.  
  • 2.2: Jamarvious Jones holds the sixth spot in the league for three pointers made per contest.  
  • 417: Turbo Smith is ranked sixth in the nation for total three point attempts.  
  • 7.1: With an average of just over seven rebounds per game, Harrison Eghan is sixth in the conference for rebounds per game.  
 
A Look at the Cardinals 
 
After their most recent win against Frostburg University, the Cardinals secured their seat as number ten in the conference in order to go to the MEC tournament and continue postseason play. Their final game of the regular season was a hard loss to West Liberty University 91-103.  
 
The Cardinals and Hilltoppers were able to match each other when it came to rebounds, both teams had a total of 46 rebounds. Wheeling grabbed 31 defensive rebounds to WLU's 25. WU shot well from the free throw line, coming out of the game with 73.1% accuracy. 
 
As a team, the Cardinals are ranked eighth in the Mountain East Conference for turnovers per game, with an average of 14.8. Wheeling also ranks well with their offensive scoring, averaging 81.9 points per game, ranking them sixth in the conference.
