Lady Pioneers End Tampa’s 22-Game Winning Streak

SAINT JOSEPH, Mo. - Glenville State Women's Basketball team battled against the Trojans of the University of Tampa and came out on top 78-68. While the Lady Pioneers only shot 38.2% from the field they out-rebounded Tampa 40-33. With the win, Glenville State advances and snaps the Trojan's 22-game winning streak.

GSU got off to a slow start and did not make a shot until the 5:30 mark in the first quarter. With the offense struggling, early Tampa started out the contest on a 9-0 run. Breanna Campbell got going early scoring seven of the Lady Pioneers' first 13 points. The Trojans jumped out to a ten-point lead with a pair of free throws by Sarah Jones. With a put-back jumper and a fast break layup, the Lady Pioneers trailed 19-13 heading into the second quarter.

Early on in the second The University of Tampa was able to hold onto a nine-point advantage for most of the quarter. Throughout the quarter Glenville battled to shrink the Trojan's advantage down to one possession. The Lady Pioneers press started to rattle Tampa. In the first half of the game, the Lady Pioneers scored 13 points off of turnovers.

At the 1:46 mark, the Trojans took a six-point lead 35-29. Before the end of the quarter Hya Haywood hit a three to make it a one-possession game once more. Mickayla Perdue's jumper in the paint made it a one-point game and ended Perdue's scoring drought.

Coming out of halftime the Lady Pioneers took their first lead of the contest 37-35. Neither squad produced a substantial run in the third keeping it close. Both offenses found their rhythm in the third but Glenville held the Trojans to just ten shots from the field. Breanna Campbell's jumper would be the last points of the quarter putting GSU up 54-52.

During the final quarter of play, both squads continued to battle back and forth. The Trojans would have the lead at the 7:43 mark. Skylar Davidson's three quickly regained the Lady  Pioneer's advantage. Tampa would tie it back up but never had the lead after being up 59-58. With Glenville closing out the quarter on a 17-5 run, Coach Stephens's completed the comeback.
