Glenville State University Athletic Hall of Fame 2023 Class Announced

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - Early this afternoon Glenville State University announced the 2023 Induction Class of the Curtis Elam Athletic Hall of Fame. Ceremonies are set for September 30th with more information being released at a later date.  
 
Sterling Beane - Class of 1970 - Beane was a walk-on that became a four-year starter for the Glenville State football program. The Gassaway, W.Va. native also was a star wrestler for GSU placing fourth in the WVIAC Tournament as a heavyweight. After college Sterling went on to start the wrestling program at Braxton County High School (BCHS). He has held the position for 52 years producing over 500 wins and has coached multiple state champions, which is a state record for West Virginia. While at BCHS Beane coached the football program to their first playoff win in 2004 and claimed three sectional championships as the head baseball coach.  
 
Sue Edwards - Sue Edwards was crucial for the Glenville State Athletic Department serving as a secretary for over three decades. She worked under five different Athletic Directors during her tenure and was a key employee.  Sue was influential in orchestrating the move from the NAIA to the NCAA for Glenville when the WVIAC made that move in 1995. 
 
Orville Harper - Class of 1966 - Harper had a successful playing career for the Pioneer baseball team as a third baseman. Orville is the only Glenville State baseball player to receive multiple first-team All-Conference selections. After his playing days at GSU, he would become a high school baseball coach at Circleville High School. While at Circleville Harper led the program to multiple state titles. Orville during his coaching years also was an official in multiple sports for over 40 years.  
 
Bernie Rees - Class of 1991 - Rees is a true two-sport standout in the history books for the Glenville State men's basketball and track and field programs. He currently remains fifth all-time for made threes and led GSU to three track titles. Bernie during the 1988 basketball season was lights out from beyond the arc shooting 51% from three which was second in the nation. Along with the three team titles Rees was a conference champion in the long jump, triple jump, and high jump. Bernie was also a part of the school's record-setting 4x100 team.  
 
Kim Short Lewis - Class of 1980 - Short was a pioneer for women's sports here at Glenville State becoming a four-year letter winner in basketball, volleyball, and track and field. Kim led the Lady Pioneers in scoring two of her four seasons becoming the program's all-time leading scorer at the time of her graduation. She is still the first and only female to receive the Montrose Award.
