Pioneers Fall to Yellow Jackets in Institute

INSTITUTE, W.Va. - The Glenville State Football team fell to West Virginia State 31-21 tonight on the road. The Yellow Jackets had 472 yards of total offense in the win.

1st Quarter
The Pioneers opened the game up with the ball but would go three and out, giving the ball to WVSU quickly. The Yellow Jackets drove down the field and settled for a 34-yard field goal, taking an early 3-0 lead. GSU went three and out once again, however it wouldn't hurt the Pioneers as West Virginia State had to punt the ball back to Glenville after a Brogan Brown sack. After Anthony Garrett had an interception to start the Pioneers third drive of the game, WVSU couldn't capitalize on a 30-yard field, keeping the game at 3-0.

2nd Quarter
The Yellow Jackets only needed 32 seconds to score on their first drive of the 2nd Quarter as Donovan Riddick found Joe Jones on a slant that went 93 yards to the endzone. Glenville State wouldn't get a first down after going down 10-0, putting the ball back into the Yellow Jackets hands. WVSU built one of their more impressive drives, traveling 77 yards for another touchdown, making it 17-0. Following a pair of dry drives by GSU, WV State scored within a minute with Riddick using his feet to score from 37 yards out. Glenville State ended the half with a score of their own on a short 3-yard connection from Anthony Garrett to Orion Bonner, trimming the deficit to 24-7.

Stats At The Half
WVSU had 123 passing yards and 84 rushing yards through the first two quarters. The Pioneers had just 33 passing yards and 70 rushing yards with 64 of those 70 coming in the 2nd Quarter.

3rd Quarter
Glenville State caught a break to open up the new half as WVSU drove down the field but couldn't score any points, missing a 32-yard field goal to end the drive. The Pioneers answered back with a scoring drive that ended with Garrett finding Zion Barnette from 32 yards out to cut the deficit down to 10. With WVSU driving, Riddick threw a floater up in the corner of the endzone that was picked off by Shaun Sterling Jr. Glenville State couldn't use this to their advantage, stalling out quickly and giving the ball back to WV State.

4th Quarter
The Pioneers had Riddick's number once again as De Vante Roberson picked him off down the sideline to give the ball back to the offense. When it seemed GSU would punt, Coach Kellar pulled out a fake and Zander Watson found Brogan Brown for a first down. However, on the next 4th down attempt, Anthony Garrett was picked off and WV State took it all the way back to the 11. WVSU scored not too long after, making it 31-14.

Following both teams going scoreless for back-to-back drives, Garrett connected with Orion Bonner down the sideline for a 30-yard touchdown. The Yellow Jackets took possession on an attempted onside kick and held it until the clock ran out, taking home the 31-21 victory.

The Final Stats
Anthony Garrett went 13-34 for 118 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. Alfred Menjor led the rushing game with 91 yards. Orion Bonner had three catches for 40 yards and two touchdowns. Zion Barnette gathered two receptions for 35 yards and one score.

Seth Arnold had another double-digit tackling game, finishing with 10 tackles to lead the Pioneers. Steve Bradshaw had eight tackles for the second-straight game. Shaun Sterling Jr. and De Vante Roberson both pulled down interceptions in the loss.

Joel Felder carried the ball 28 times for 120 yards and two scores. Joe Jones had three receptions for 112 yards and one touchdown as he had a 93-yard touchdown reception early in the game.

TJ Lomax and Kameron Vargas both finished with 10 tackles to lead WVSU. Nick Blake and Jy Martin had interceptions in the back end of the defense. Corlyn Witcher was a force up front, finishing with five tackles and 2.0 TFL.
