Preview: Pioneer Volleyball Set to Host Salem & West Virginia Tech This Week

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - Glenville State Volleyball will host Salem (Sept. 5) and West Virginia Tech (Sept. 8) this week inside the Waco Center, marking the first time the Pioneers will be at home this season. GSU will play WV Tech twice on Friday night.

THE OPPONENTS 
SALEM 
The Tigers enter (0-1) after a season-opening defeat to Claflin at home on Thursday. Salem went winless last season (0-32), only winning two sets the whole year. 

Matt Carpenter enters his first year leading the Tiger program. Carpenter recently served as the Head Coach at nearby Ritchie County High School for nine seasons. During that tenure, he amassed 281 career wins with two State Runner-up finishes, seven WV State Tournament appearances, two conference championships, three sectional titles and four regional championships. 

Mykenzie Clyncke led the Tigers with nine kills against Claflin while Trinity Eliasen had 12 assists to lead the team. Alayna Cox performed well on the defensive end, finishing with 17 digs over the three sets. 

WEST VIRGINIA TECH 
The Golden Bears come in (1-7), previously falling to Bluefield University on Saturday 3-0. WV Tech's lone win came on Aug. 18 against Indiana University Northwest. 

Amber Linville enters year #5 as Head Coach of the Golden Bears. Prior to taking the program over, Linville was an assistant for two seasons on the WV Tech bench. In her five seasons as HC, she has been to three conference tournament appearances, including the program's first conference championship appearance. 

Ana Muniz Rocando leads the Golden Bears in kills with 89. She has three games with 13 or more kills and had a season-high 17 kills against Shawnee State. Julia McLanahan has 158 assists on the year, leading WV Tech. McLanahan recorded a season-high against Shawnee State as well, finishing with 38 assists. 

THE PIONEERS 
GLENVILLE STATE 
The Pioneers enter (0-4) after falling to UNC Pembroke, Palm Beach Atlantic, Shepherd and Cedarville to open the season at the Cedarville Invitational. 

Katarzyna Niderla (32), Rita Kelly (24) and Sydney Goodrich (22) all have 20 or more kills on the season. Sarah Grainger has already accounted for 92 assists this year while Lindsay Winkler has 39 digs and Katarzyna Niderla leads the team with 19 blocks.
