Preview: Pioneers Travel to Lake Erie College on Wednesday; Open MEC Play at WVSU on Sunday

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - Glenville State Women's Soccer will hit the road this week as they travel to Lake Erie College for a battle with the Storm tomorrow (Sept. 6) and will open MEC play at West Virginia State on Sunday (Sept. 10).

THE OPPONENTS 
LAKE ERIE 
The Storm enter (0-1) overall after a 2-1 defeat at home against Roberts Wesleyan to open the season on Thursday. LEC finished the 2022 campaign (1-14-2, 0-13-1 GMAC) with their only victory being their season opener against Purdue Northwest. 

Becks Young is in her first year leaading the Storm WSOC program. She had successful stints as an assistant at Gannon and Mercyhurst before taking the job at Lake Erie. Young also was an assistant at Adrian College and played her collegiate soccer at West Alabama and Mercyhurst. 

Emily Ngo had the lone goal for the Storm against Roberts Wesleyan, assisted by Taylor Hartman. Morgan Vanmemter recorded six saves while giving up two. In 2022, Lake Erie only scored nine goals as a team. 

WEST VIRGINIA STATE 
The Yellow Jackets come into the week (0-1), opening the season with a loss on the road at Ohio Dominican 1-0. In 2022, West Virginia State went (17-3-2, 13-1-2 MEC). Prior to meeting with the Pioneers on Sunday, WVSU will play at the University of Indianapolis tomorrow afternoon. 

Brandon Slewa is in his first season as HC of the Yellow Jackets. Prior to taking over at West Virginia State, Slewa was a part of the Fairmont State WSOC coaching staff as an assistant in 2022. In his only year with the Falcons, FSU captured their first ever MEC Tournament Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance. He also spent time as an assistant at Salem. 

Esther Dhiramo, Karissa Vela and Sandra Linares lead the team in shots with three apiece. Linares and Vela are both tied for the team lead in shots on goal with two. Dhiramo was second on the team in goals last year with 10. 

THE PIONEERS 
GLENVILLE STATE 
The Pioneers come in (1-0) following their 3-0 victory over Bluefield State on Sunday at Morris Stadium. 

Merel Smets started off the season strong with two goals on Sunday, boosting her to 10 goals in her career. Aitana Viejo notched her first goal of her career late in the 2nd Half. Mackenzie Hendricks and Graylin Floyd both accounted for an assist as well.
