Dominiq Penn’s Clutch Three-Pointer Lifts Pioneers Over Wheeling

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - The Glenville State Men's Basketball team picked up another MEC victory tonight with a 77-76 nail biter over Wheeling inside the Waco Center. The Pioneers shot 37% from the field and converted on 10 three-pointers, including Dominiq Penn's clutch three in the closing seconds.

GSU was able to gain control early, going up 9-2 in the first three and a half minutes. Following a pair of three-pointers later in the half, Glenville built their biggest lead of the game (11) at 27-16. The offense then became stale for the Pioneers with the Cardinals switching into a zone, forcing bad shots by the blue and white. This also boosted the Wheeling offense as WU was able to gain a small 38-37 lead going into the locker room.

The Pioneers regained the lead at 44-40 to start the second half, however Wheeling took it back just as quickly. Three-pointers rained for the Pioneers on consecutive possessions, helping lift the Glenville lead back to nine. GSU couldn't pull away, forcing the game to be a nail biter to the end.

Down 74-71, the Cardinals scored five-straight points to go up 76-74 with just 26 seconds remaining. On Glenville's next possession, Bob Bolen had just the play set up for the Pioneers. Dominiq Penn took the handoff from James Franklin and drained a fadeaway three in the corner to put GSU up one with 12 seconds left. Wheeling's leading scorer Marcus Johnson had two good looks to win it for the Cardinals but he left empty-handed on both shots, propelling the Pioneers to the exciting 77-76 victory.

The Final Stats
Dominiq Penn led the Pioneers with 21 points on 50% shooting. Jordan Turbo Smith was also in double figures with 11 points, also adding eight rebounds and six assists. Trevor Chandler played key minutes off the bench, netting eight points and pulling down seven boards in the win.
