Lady Pioneers Secure Fifth-Straight Victory, Defeat MEC Leading Wheeling

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - The Glenville State Women's Basketball team defeated the conference's number one team, Wheeling, 78-58 tonight inside the Waco Center. GSU drained 12 three-pointers and held the Cardinals to 1-14 shooting from behind the arc in the win.

The Lady Pioneers opened up the night with a three by Dream Cherry and a 15-footer from Esther Oluade to boost themselves to a quick 5-0 advantage. After nearly three minutes of no buckets, Wheeling finally found the scoring column on a layup. From there, both squads would trade baskets until GSU went on a 12-2 run to close out the opening quarter and take a 22-12 lead into the second quarter. The lead grew to 16 at 35-19 in the second, but WU knocked the deficit down to 10 by the time halftime struck with Glenville leading 43-33.

Wheeling fell behind 54-41 with 4:22 left in the third quarter, not being able to make up any ground since the second half started. That changed as WU held the Lady Pioneers scoreless for almost all of the rest of the half until Payton James drilled a three as time expired, putting the Lady Pioneer lead to six at 57-51. In the fourth quarter, the pace eventually became too much for the Cardinals with the Lady Pioneers quickly increasing their lead to 16 midway through the quarter. GSU maintained control for the remainder of the contest, closing out the 78-58 victory.

The Final Stats
Hya Haywood led all scorers with 18 points while adding five rebounds, five steals and four assists. Dream Cherry added 14 points and Zhordan Shannon finished with 10 points. Lauren Calhoun's six rebounds led the Lady Pioneers in the victory.
