WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. - The Glenville State Women's Basketball team recorded their sixth-straight victory tonight at West Liberty, defeating the Hilltoppers 93-74 on the road to begin their three-game road trip. The Lady Pioneers got 86 shots off, netting 36 of them for a 42% shooting day from the field. The Hilltoppers were forced into 40 turnovers in the loss.
GSU started the game with numerous buckets, gaining an early 14-4 advantage five minutes in. The lead grew to as much as 13, however WLU fought their way back into the game before it got out of hand, trimming the Lady Pioneers lead to 24-19 at the end of the first quarter. In the following quarter, Glenville amped the pressure back up, forcing the Hilltoppers into even more turnovers and putting the lead back to double digits. A strong finish to the end of the first half allowed GSU to hold onto a 48-36 lead going into the break.
An advantage that was boosted up to 23 in the third quarter, the Lady Pioneers continuously made WLU turn the ball over to coast into the closing quarter up 77-54. In the fourth quarter, Glenville was held to their lowest point total (16) of the game but it wouldn't hurt them at all, closing out their 93-73 win on the road.
The Final Stats
Lauren Calhoun and Hya Haywood scored 23 points each to lead the Lady Pioneers. Calhoun led the team in rebounding with eight while Haywood grabbed three boards and swiped three steals. Chalon Miles (12 points) and Dream Cherry (10 points) were also in double digits. Three Lady Pioneers had three assists in the win.
The Hilltoppers were led by Corinne Thomas' 27 points and 10 rebounds, followed by Bailee Smith's 23 points and three assists. Jenna Riccardo was the last Hilltopper to reach double figures, finishing with 12 points.
