INSTITUTE, W.Va. - The Glenville State Women's Basketball team picked up another huge MEC road victory tonight, avenging their loss earlier in the season to West Virginia State with a 98-92 win. The resilient Lady Pioneers forced 34 turnovers and grabbed 27 offensive rebounds in the victory.
A lot of pressing, turnovers and three-point field goals attempted was the storyline for the opening quarter as the two teams combined for 15 turnovers and 10 three-point field goal attempts. 10 of those 15 turnovers were forced by the Lady Pioneers, converting to 10 points off turnovers. That helped Glenville carry a 19-11 lead going into the second quarter. The Lady Pioneers built a 13-point lead (24-11) in the first two minutes of the 2Q but WVSU was able to quickly trim it back down to five just four minutes later. A pair of buckets as the half was closing allowed GSU to lead 43-35 at halftime.
The Lady Pioneers took off in the third quarter, jumping out to a 60-47 lead at the under five-minute media timeout. GSU capped off their 29-point quarter with a layup from Lauren Calhoun to hold onto a 72-59 advantage going into the closing quarter. The two talented squads traded three-pointers in the first couple minutes of the fourth quarter until WVSU forced multiple turnovers in a row to trim the deficit down to four with five minutes left in the game, causing HC Emily Stoller to call a timeout.
However, the Yellow Jackets continued to chip away and tied the game on free throws with 1:44 remaining. Glenville then answered with free throws from Chalon Miles and a huge three-pointer from Hya Haywood to put GSU back up by five. Misses and a couple of turnovers on the offensive end by WVSU helped push the Lady Pioneers to the 98-92 win.
