Preview: Men’s Basketball Back on the Road this Week Against WVSU & Concord

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - Glenville State Men's Basketball is back on the road this week as the Pioneers will travel to West Virginia State tomorrow (Jan. 24) and Concord on Saturday (Jan. 27). GSU defeated the Yellow Jackets to open MEC play back in December but haven't met with the Mountain Lions so far this season.

THE OPPONENTS 
WEST VIRGINIA STATE 
The Yellow Jackets come in (10-5, 6-3 MEC) and have won four games in a row, including a clean sweep over Davis & Elkins and West Virginia Wesleyan last week. 

Bryan Poore is in his 25th season as the HC at WVSU. Poore is the winningest coach in program history with a record of 386-297. Prior to his success with the Yellow Jackets, he was an assistant coach at Marshall for three seasons and the University of Charleston for five seasons. Poore was also an assistant at Alderson Broaddus for a season to start out his collegiate coaching career.   

Anthony Pittman has been a star for WVSU over the years and that has not changed a bit in 2023-24 as the redshirt senior is leading the team in points (16.7 PPG), rebounds (7.0 RPG), assists (2.8 APG) and steals (2.4 SPG). Pittman is backed by this past week's MEC Player of the Week Arthur Cox, who is averaging 12.6 PPG and 5.5 RPG on the season and Nate Mims, who is totaling 10.4 PPG and 4.7 RPG. 

CONCORD 
The Mountain Lions enter (10-3, 6-3 MEC) following a 94-88 victory over Wheeling on Saturday evening. Earlier last week, CU fell to No. 20 West Liberty at home 91-79. 

Todd May is now in his eighth season as the HC of Concord MBB. May has over 100 wins since taking over at Concord, including a 20-win campaign during the 2018-19 season. Before taking over the program, May was an assistant at Concord under Kent McBride for four seasons. In his last year as an assistant, CU won the 2016 MEC Championship and appeared in the NCAA DII Atlantic Regional Tournament. 

Kollin Tolbert is one of five Mountain Lions averaging double figures, leading the team at 13.4 PPG while also leading the team in rebounds at 6.8 RPG. JJ Harper (12.5 PPG), Jordan Wooden (10.8 PPG), Amare Smith (10.7 PPG) and Jevon Laidler (10.2 PPG) are all averaging double digits. Wooden's 2.5 APG is first on the team and Tolbert's 2.2 APG is second on the squad. As a team, CU is averaging 80.1 PPG. 

THE PIONEERS 
GLENVILLE STATE
 
The Pioneers are (9-7, 5-4 MEC) entering the new week after defeating Wheeling 77-76 on Wednesday and falling to No. 20 West Liberty 114-78 on Saturday. 

Dominiq Penn (14.7 PPG), Jordan Turbo Smith (13.9 PPG, 4.7 RPG, 4.5 APG) and Devin Collins (12.3 PPG, 6.0 RPG) have been key for the Pioneers all season. Jay Scott is adding 9.8 PPG while James Franklin and Prince Mosengo are both scoring over seven points per game. GSU is up to 84.3 PPG and shooting 43% from the field as a team on the year.
